On Saturday, August 8, 2009, in a wood-paneled room inside the Supreme Court, Judge Sonia Sotomayor became Justice Sonia Sotomayor, ***
Sotomayor was worth around $750,000 at the time. Now, she is worth an estimated $5 million. Her position has brought her fame, and that fame has led to book deals, providing $3.8 million in earnings since she joined the court.
The post also allowed her to hire staff, which she used for many things—including reportedly pumping up her book sales, something that drew scrutiny but apparently stayed within the bounds of the law, if only because Supreme Court justices have fewer ethics restrictions than other government officials.

In 1991, on the recommendation of then-Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, a Democrat from New York, President George H.W. Bush nominated Sotomayor for a seat in the Southern District of New York.

Things changed fast after she joined the highest court. From 2010 to 2012, she received $3.1 million in advance payments for her 2013 memoir, “My Beloved World.” The book has sold over 300,000 copies, according to NPD Bookscan, an industry data service. She plowed the windfall, more than she received in salary for 17 years as a judge combined, into a diversified mix of equity and bond funds. In 2012, Sotomayor also purchased an apartment in Washington, D.C. for $660,000, taking out a $500,000 mortgage.
She followed her memoir with four children’s books, all published in both English and Spanish. Penguin Random House paid her $650,000 over six years for those titles. Encouraged by her Supreme Court staff, especially ahead of speaking engagements, many schools and libraries bought the books; that, in turn, kicked off royalties to Sotomayor, according to the Associated Press.

A bribe by any other name...
Some whores ain’t cheap!
the old “whats good for me is not for thee” principle.
“wise latina” now rich.
“she received $3.1 million in advance payments for her 2013 memoir, “My Beloved World.” The book has sold over 300,000 copies”
About $10/book.
About what Amazon sells it for.
I’d like to know the name of the printer, it seems to work for free.
I don’t have a problem with her making money from book sales. After all, nobody forces anyone to buy her books.
If it was honest book sales, neither would I.
Political books are usually payoffs for services rendered.
Politician writes a book and gets a huge "advance" (the payoff). Government, NGOs, libraries, universities (i.e. you the taxpayer) etc. buys a shitload of the books which very few are interested in reading, which wind up on library shelves or in dumps (the stories are out there).
“I don’t have a problem with her making money from book sales. After all, nobody forces anyone to buy her books.”
That’s how the grift works: Write a book; a “donor” buys up all the copies (thus the author gets the royalties), and uses the books as kindling. The author “gets the message,” and takes care of the “donor.”
Possibly. Don’t know if that’s the case, here, though.
If she uses ghost writers on her books is that plagiarism?
Nuff said!
No using ghost writers is not plagiarism.
But if she copies Joe Biden, that's double plagiarism.
The dumbass latina... not only do we have to abide her SCOTUS rulings, but she has gotten rich in the process.
Why did Republican President Bush take a recommendation from Dem Senator Moynihan for a judicial appointment?!
Who in their right mind read it?!
Sounds like she should recuse herself from all cases!
$upreme Court. Some take advantage of power.
$$otomayer.
