After an initial outpouring of patriotism in the months after Russia's invasion began, the realities of the battlefield -- and mobilisation -- have largely set in among Ukraine's population.
Heavy casualties and almost two years of grinding trench warfare have sparked a fierce debate on the future of the draft, an ever more pertinent topic as the army struggles to fill its ranks.
President Volodymyr Zelensky warned last month the military wanted to mobilise up to half a million people to battle the 600,000 or so Russian soldiers deployed in Ukraine.
The patriotic impetus of the early months, when Ukrainians went en masse to the front voluntarily, is no longer there.
More and more often, stories of men desperately trying to evade the draft appear in Ukrainian media.
In December, the government submitted a draft bill to parliament lowering the age of military service from 27 to 25 and simplifying the process of enlistment.
After a major backlash, several lawmakers and the presidency gave assurances the text would be debated and amended.-

Ruling party lawmaker Mariana Bezugla suggested exempting people from mobilisation in exchange for a substantial donation to the budget.
Former economy minister Tymofy Mylovanov raised the idea of a draft lottery...
There have also been calls for troops to be rotated and for those who have been at the front for a long time to be demobilised.

The Ukraine probably has an election coming up soon. Then the people can either re-elect the war party, or replace them with new leaders.
I know where to find a few million military-age men. They’re crossing our southern border every single day.
Round them up, and instead of flying them to New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Boston, fly them to Kiev.
Tell them that if they survive the war, they can live in Ukraine.

Yes, the Yankee model in the War to Suppress States Rights. But apparently someone who never read about the New York draft riots. Or for that matter the Viet Nam draft protest where folks couldn't buy their way out, but could hide in Universities and Seminaries, or buy medical diagnoses.
Ukraine has lost an entire generation of young men which will have a serious effect on necessary population growth.

We had an election during the Civil War in 1864. Zelensky canceled his plans to hold an election in Ukraine.
Zelensky’s a totalitarian thug - he and his goons will make the call. There is NO meaningful ‘debate’ in hellhole cultures. There’s no meaningful ‘debate’ in Russia either... Or for that matter in the US. Look at our open border - THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN AND THEY WANT THE BORDER CLOSED. Biden and his goons can’t lie about the border being closed because we all have eyes...
Zelensky sure likes sending white Christian men to their deaths.
Russia already has 450k men in training after graduating in December 2023 400k. Ukraine is going to be overwhelming out manned. This is the first time in two years Russia will actually match man for mam the Ukrainian army in the field. To this point, Russia has been fighting with 190k to 300k. In June Russia will field yet another Army Group with new equipment sending the projected Russian Army to four Combined Arms Army Corps of 400m each.
Ukraine is now relegated to pure defensive operations as was their NAZI great grandfather’s.
Russia is going to dictate the terms of surrender as they did in 1945.

Now when Ukrainians apply for their Social Security benefits, they’er automatically registered for the Draft.....
Can non-russians really believe that if Ukraine gives up the World will be safe again? Russia will get the message they can take over any country they want and kill as many people as they wish. Ukraine did not force Russia to attack. The Russians thought it would be a cake walk. It would be better for the US to support Ukraine to do the combat instead of waiting until Russia attacks NATO and we have to put 5 Divisions on the front lines.
