MADRID, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Spain's government proposed a nationwide mandate for people to wear masks in hospitals and health clinics on Monday, and Italy said respiratory illness infection rates had hit a record, as flu and COVID spread across Europe.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control recommended that people on the continent stay home if they feel sick, and consider wearing masks in crowds or healthcare settings, with flu spreading as it typically does this time of year but hitting some countries harder than others.
It said Europeans should follow national guidelines on vaccinating vulnerable groups. Flu is now circulating at higher levels than other common respiratory pathogens, including the Sars-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, it said.
Several Spanish regions already ordered patients, visitors and staff at hospitals to wear masks last week. Spain's central government proposed on Monday extending that requirement nationwide, but regional leaders in charge of health policy have so far rejected that, with a decision expected on Wednesday.

You’d think they’d learn.
Believe me-—it’s coming here. These evil tyrants don’t care-—they love dividing us on this crap. I will not comply to worthless mandates-—kick me out.
Spain has a very leftwing government that is actually illegitimate because the conservatives won but because Spain has a parliamentary system, the left was able to manipulate it into a slight majority. Catholics are being persecuted and they are down at the headquarters of the Socialist Party protesting every day. Some have been jailed for it.
Not that you’d know any of this from our press.
Great. By now everyone knows the masks don’t work to stop the spread of any virus and they make people sick.
Idiocy.
Anyone closing down the labs still working to kill us all?
Just a bad flu season plus bad weather where they arent used to it.
Spain has a quite decentralized government, the bulk of Spain has conservative regional governments, which are in charge of things like running hospitals, and the left wing government is hanging on by a thread. They arent going to do anything egregiously lefty as they risk no confidence votes.
