~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona

AZyumapg2

Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) is a United States Army series of environmentally specific test centers with its Yuma Test Center (YTC) being one of the largest military installations in the world. It is subordinate to the U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command.

YPG's headquarters is located at its YTC in southwestern La Paz County and western Yuma County in southwest Arizona, United States, approximately 30 miles north of the city of Yuma.

AZyumapg1AZyumapg1AZyumapg1AZyumapg1

AZyumapg4

Of the four extreme natural environments recognized as critical in the testing of military equipment, three fall under the management authority of YPG. Realistic natural environment testing ensures that American military equipment performs as advertised, wherever deployed around the world.

YPG manages military equipment and munitions testing at three locations: The Cold Regions Test Center at Fort Greely, Alaska; the Tropic Regions Test Center operating in Panama, Honduras, Suriname, and Hawaii; and at YTC. The common link between these test centers is "environmental testing," which makes the proving ground the Army's environmental test expert.

AZyumapg6

YTC encompasses 1,307.8 square miles of the northwestern Sonoran Desert and conducts tests on nearly every weapon in the ground combat arsenal. Nearly all the long-range artillery testing for U.S. ground forces takes place at the YTC in an area almost completely removed from urban encroachment and noise concerns.

Restricted airspace controlled by the test center amounts to over 2,000 square miles. YTC has the longest overland artillery range (40 miles or 64 kilometres) in the nation, the most highly instrumented helicopter armament test range in the Department of Defense, over 200 miles of improved road courses for testing tracked and wheeled military vehicles, over 600 miles of fiber-optic cable linking test locations, and the most modern mine and demolitions test facility in the western hemisphere.

AZyumapg5

YTC offers the following for testing, evaluation, and training purposes:

Ground weapons systems from small arms to long range artillery

Helicopter armament and target acquisition systems

Artillery and tank munitions

Cargo and personnel parachutes, including guided systems technologies

Land mines and mine-removal systems

Tracked and wheeled vehicles in a desert environment

Vibration and interference-free tests of smart weapon systems

Laguna Army Airfield complex, featuring two runways – 6,000 feet and 5,150 feet

12 drop zones and multiple airstrips for Unmanned Aerial Systems

A 55-mile overland artillery range, the longest in the nation

Over 200 miles of improved road courses for tracked and wheeled vehicles

State-of-the-art fiber optics systems to acquire, reduce and transmit data in real time

Specialized facilities for testing countermeasures for the defeat of roadside bombs, such as the National

Counterterrorism/Counterinsurgency Integrated Test and Evaluation site

Seven inches!! That’s a lotta snow in my book. Were you able to snag some pictures or was it too cold to even try?

You know the funny part of this insane situation? Thursday the high will be 71. LOL! Can’t keep the desert in the deep freeze forever. However, this is too long! I like winter. In moderation. 😎

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

I imagine Gizmo enjoyed getting out for a ride yesterday. Not quite as fun as running around at the lakes but still out of the house for a little while. I know he’ll be happy when you can head back out to your rompin’ grounds. :-)

It’s a winter wonderland here with a lot of snow on the ground. Gonna be mighty cold here all week.

I’m ready for Spring. LOL

It's a lotta snow in my book too! We don't get this much snow often. The last time we had more than a dusting was to years ago and we got around 5 inches then.

I got a few pics from inside since it was snowing so hard. I didn't feel like getting soaked walking around. The snow was coming down in huge fluffy clumps.

I thought I saw a group of vultures out along the road but when I zoomed in, I saw it was my Bad Boyz - - wild turkey toms that live in the woods by the house. Haven't seen them in a while.

Fortunately we didn't get enough snow to cover all the corn stubble in the background. It would REALLY be deep if it did.

Oooooooh, you didn't have to tell me about your upcoming 71 degrees. *sigh* Our highest temp will be around 35 Thursday, then back into the deep freeze again. They say we'll have rain, then sleet, then snow Thursday which means we'll have ice all weekend.

Egad! That made me cold-er just looking at it. Great pictures! Looks like some of the footage that the storm chasers got up north. Those turkeys look like they’re doing a snow dance.

LOL! Looking out the windows made me cold too. This was a little after 10 this morning when I woke up briefly.

It was that dark and dreary all day. I believe it's supposed to be sunny tomorrow but it's still going to be frigid. Those clear skies tomorrow night will drop our temp to around 5 overnight and even colder overnight Wednesday. This is NOT fun.

Those turkeys were on the move, trying to find something to eat. They were out along the road in the pic I posted, came across the field towards the house, then headed for the woods. I hope they were able to find something to eat while they were out.

That is a beautiful scene. Would make a wonderful Christmas graphic OR card! I like seeing it from a distance. :) To me, that doesn’t look dreary. It looks serene. But I’m weird like that.

Right now you have the same “real” temp that Anchorage does. Does that make you feel colder? We’re 2 degrees warmer. LOL! I hope we both warm up soon, but I guess I will before you do. And no...it’s not fun to have to live with.

Guess I’ll finish up this mystery show I’m watching and head to the bankies. Peaches went out for a bit, and he was not thrilled with the cold. He was standing under the heat register when he came back in trying to thaw. :) Now I hope he’s back there warming up my spot on the bed.

See ya tomorrow.

You like clouds and I prefer sunshine. LOL Cloudy weather is depressing.
It’ll be blinding out there tomorrow ..... er, later today with the clouds out of the way. And prettier.

Yep, it’s downright cold out there and I noticed the little chain the hummingbird feeder hangs on is swaying a little more than it was earlier. The breeze has picked up.

You and Peaches keep each other warm and sleep well. Catch ya tomorrow for the quiz.

The Siege at Khe Sanh - Black Rifle Cofffee Co.

Dennis Manion recounts the gripping story of his time in Vietnam, the strain his deployment put on his relationship with his family, and the surreal feeling of being back 30 years later.

Comments below the video:

” My history teacher was at Khe Sanh and was wounded there. He was a big part of the reason that I decided to enlist 14 years ago! Always remember those legends! “

Send some of that warmth up here, please! LOL

At least the sun's shining today, not that it does any good. But it makes for a cheerier view through the windows.

Well, it’s not here yet. It’s still 25 and feels like 19. I’m sure you are very happy to see that ol’ sun!

Oh, and my experiment with the mug warmer underneath the water dish was successful. The water, when I checked this morning, was quite chilly but very unfrozen. \o/ Yay!

I don’t know what the wind chill is here but it’s in the low single digits, easily. Just got back from checking the well house and the wind is whipping pretty good. BRRRRRRRRR

VERY happy to see the sun today after the dreariness of yesterday. Just too bad it doesn’t have much in the way of warmth with it. Guess I’ll have to settle for our mid 40s next Monday. We won’t see your 71 for a looooong time.

Great that the warmer worked on the kitties’ water dish! One less thing to worry about.

I slept better last night knowing that the kitties would at least have water overnight to go with their food. I’m pretty sure they stayed in hiding all night, though.
