Dogs are very sensitive to what their masters like and dislike and as protectors to their masters will act on what they pick up. Specific training is not really necessary.

I didn’t find out about what she went thru until her first stroke in 1980.
She and Dad kept us in the dark. After a couple more strokes, she passed in 1986.
