Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala has filed criminal charges against the owner of the abandoned Century III Mall.
Century III Mall PA, LLC is facing one felony count of causing or risking a catastrophe and one misdemeanor for making a public nuisance. The company’s Las Vegas-based owner, Moonbeam Capital Investments, bought the property in 2013, but never fulfilled assurances that it would redevelop the site.
“They clearly have no intention of doing anything with the property as it exists. They've abandoned [it], for all intents and purposes,” Zappala said at a press conference announcing the charges Tuesday. “This is a monument to blight.”

Originally a DeBartolo mall that was built on a slag heap in the late 70's. It was hailed as an economic rejuvenation at the time, except it was very hard to get to.
It was dying in the 80's. Maybe the democrat DA should sue his probable political donor, Jeff Bezos.
Tear it down and charge the owners.
Given changes in retail, and the phenomenon of dead malls, perhaps the owners see no point in redevelopment?
Malls will become the command and control centers housing the mercenaries imported to our cities. Housing, legal services, food, etc..... like small military bases.
House a few thousand illegals there.
Instead of (formerly) high class hotels.
Who would invest in creating a place where flash mobs can
wipe store owners out in under a month?
Maybe that DA could help stop the crime wave sweeping the
nation. Sure couldn’t hurt.
Geez dog, don’t give them any ideas.
I watch videos of abandoned malls online and if you follow “sal” on youtube, you’ll find Moonbeam is this way with every mall they own.
They buy it, promise to restore/renovate then do nothing.
It’s their reputation and for some reason, a business practice..
It’s been happening for a while now. A few each week. A perfectly good crisis....
Time for another remake of Dawn of the Dead.
Do they get some sort of tax incentive to do this?
Because holding property that gives no return is kind of a weird thing to do.
With a company name like “Moonbeam,” what did you expect?
This city is now “investor proof.” Good luck finding them
Any “public emergency” or “public safety” expenditures related to the property, from actions by public authorities, can be charged to the owners and as long as the owners have paid, and are paying, their taxes they have not legally abandoned the property; and its disposition and the timing of that belongs to the owners, not the local government.
Century III Mall is an abandoned enclosed shopping mall located along Route 51 in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, approximately 10 miles southeast of downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. The mall was built on a former slag dump in 1979. The Century III Mall planning began in 1976, opened in 1979, and closed in 2019.
It was a very nice mall, if you're in to that sort of thing.
It's main problem was location, on the border between Pleasant Hills, a nice suburban neighborhood and West Mifflin, which is not.
The hood rats, soon, realized that the mall parking lot would be easy pickens for their criminal endeavors.
Robberies, assaults, car thefts, auto burglaries...
Friend of a relative was raped, in her car, by a black, just released felon.
Also, the buses transferred there. Gangs of "teens" would congregate around the entrances, harrassing, threatening, assaulting and robbing customers.
Girls and young women stopped going because sexual assault and battery was guaranteed.
South Hills Village, in Bethel Park is, actually doing pretty well, I think.
Lebanon church road Pittsburgh!
