Toyota warns 50,000 US vehicle owners to stop driving, get immediate repairs( 2003-2004 model year Corolla, 2003-2004 Corolla Matrix, and 2004-2005 RAV4s with Takata air bag inflators)

Toyota Motor (7203.T), opens new tab said on Monday it is urging the owners of 50,000 older U.S. vehicles to get immediate recall repairs because an air bag inflator could explode and potentially kill motorists. The Japanese automaker said the "Do Not Drive" advisory covers some 2003-2004 model year Corolla, 2003-2004 Corolla Matrix, and 2004-2005 RAV4s with Takata air bag inflators. More than 30 deaths worldwide, including 26 U.S. deaths, and hundreds of injuries in various automakers' vehicles since 2009 are linked to Takata air bag inflators that can explode, unleashing metal shrapnel inside cars and trucks. Over the last decade, more than 67 million Takata air bag inflators have been recalled in the United States by more than 20 automakers, and more than 100 million inflators worldwide, in the biggest auto safety callback in history. Toyota said the RAV4 recall involves the driver's airbag while the other recalls involve the front passenger airbag only. In some Corolla and Corolla Matrix models, certain vehicles are also involved in a second recall that can cause the airbag to deploy even without a crash.

The Takata inflators have been a thing across many makes and models for a couple of years now, haven’t they? I’m pretty sure I had a recall for them on my ‘05 Ranger back in 2017.

“for a couple of years now, haven’t they?”

I got a recall in 2015 and it took almost a year to get replacements.

I have a Matrix. Great car, but the Takata airbag recall happened many years ago. I took it in and had them replaced.

End of story?

Not quite. As the article says, there has been another recall. In addition to the first recall.

SNAFU

They are recalling twenty-year-old cars?

20 years these cars have been on the road and they’re just figuring this out?

I’m safe. My Toyota and its airbags are older than that.

I believe I know someone with a 2002 Corolla. Who is to say no 2002’s are affected. That would make me nervous.

Also it is really easy to unhook the driver air bag. There is usually a two wire yellow connector under the lower panel between your knees and the steering wheel that just disconnects the airbag. Passenger air bag can be unhooked in the same manor, but I expect that you could get criminally charged if you unhooked it and someone got hurt.

No... the notice I saw said that this was a follow up to an earlier recall (one that likely happened 8 or 10 years). I guess this can be called a recall but it seems that is more a reminder than anything else. What I saw was a statement that the original recall replaced the airbag part on X number of vehicles but what they are doing is going to go after the residual that did not respond to the original recall.

That was my guess, but it's difficult to tell that from the Toyota press release (above), not to mention the Reuter's translation.

Some of the cars probably haven't had the work done because they have been junked and recycled.

Toyotas are built to last, and there are an awful lot of them built every year. Having had an airbag go off in my face during a bumper-tap low-speed collision (no other damage), I got used to driving my already-aging car around with the airbag tucked back almost-into the original container, and the air bag light on in the dashboard. :^)
