Gavin Newsom Deploys State Police For ‘Surge Operation’ To Combat Oakland Crime

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is deploying the state police to target growing crime in Oakland, California, according to a Tuesday press release.

Violent incidents rose by 21% from 2022 to 2023 with robberies and burglaries jumping 38% and 23%, respectively, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. As a result, Newsom said that 120 California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers were going to be sent to Oakland and the surrounding area to “restore a sense of safety,” according to the press release.

“As crime rates across California decrease — including right across the Bay in San Francisco — Oakland is seeing the opposite trend. What’s happening in this beautiful city and surrounding area is alarming and unacceptable. I’m sending the California Highway Patrol to assist local efforts to restore a sense of safety that the hardworking people of Oakland and the East Bay demand and deserve,” Newsom said.

A San Mateo County Sheriff officer puts up police tape at a crime scene after a shooting at the Spanish Town shops in Half Moon Bay, California, on January 24, 2023. - A suspected gunman was in custody Monday over the killing of seven people in a rural community in northern California, just two days after a mass shooting at a Lunar New Year celebration near Los Angeles.

CHP’s focus will be on “auto theft, cargo theft, retail crime, violent crime, and high-visibility traffic enforcement” and officers will use technology to read license plates to “identify and recover stolen vehicles,” according to the press release. Some of the officers will also make up specialized units such as K9 teams and “air support” and will increase police presence by 900%.

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao said that the “surge” of criminal activity in his city is “completely unacceptable” and thanked Newsom for “providing these critical law enforcement resources that are a game-changer in helping us hold more criminals accountable and make Oakland safer,” according to the press release.

The governor’s decision comes after he sent six CHP officers and a police sergeant to Oakland in August to get crime under control, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Since then the additional police presence resulted in the arrests of 100 people and the recovery of almost 200 stolen cars last year.

In November, Newsom argued during a debate with Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis that California was doing better on violent crime than Florida. However, FBI data revealed that the combined rates for homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault in 2022 for California were 499.5 offenses per 100,000 individuals, with the national average at 380.7 and Florida’s coming in at 258.9.

Dog and Pony show. He will do this so when he runs for President it will be in his campaign ads. What the ads will not show is very few arrested will see any time in jail.

California is a catch and release state.

Why is he oppressing the black people?

Has he forgotten all he learned from the summer of love 2020 that he, himself, supported?

Wrong application of forces. Consider B-52 raid, iron bombs first.

Where’s he going to hide when a CHIP officer has to shoot someone, or manhandle one when he resists arrest? Oh my!

Crime is a revolving door there and won’t stop if there are no prosecutions and no consequences

Not sure how effective CHiPs officers will be an an Oakland urban setting. They’re freeway police.

To prevent car theft a car system might require destination information to be entered in.

home - by voice

airport - by voice

San Francisco International - by voice

Apple - by voice

sister (sister’s home) - by voice

San Mateo - by voice

authorized cell phone destination specified

All of those would have to be by an authorized voice.

If unusual, a four-digit voice code would have to be given.

If the wrong voice code is given the car would be speed limited to say 35 mph and by 5 mph less a minute.

deter car theft

Also, the car would get speed limited if driven more than one mile off course.

Cars might be given a special device.

The police would simply have to enter the owner’s driver license number, plate number or home address to slow the car down.

As crime rates across California decrease — including right across the Bay in San Francisco

I do not believe this. Mass retail theft alone has increased - what's decreased is reporting it b/c the businesses know nothing will be done so what's the point?

Many crimes are downgraded by the DA or either not processed at all or the criminal let go, no charges.

One would be a fool to let down his guard in Los Angeles, Sacramento or San Francisco.

No wonder so many businesses in the Bay Area have either closed are in the process of closing.

If they don’t prosecute and incarcerate it is meaningless. You could have a cop every ten feet. What difference would it make?

States need to be able to declare a city as dysfunctional and move in and take it over - for a set period of time with city wide elections following the achievment of a stable financial and public safety environment.

“Restore a sense of safety”. You won’t be any safer, but you’ll feel that you are.
