BMW is ready to say goodbye to electric cars: They are preparing to launch their new hydrogen car

BMW is introducing a trial fleet of the BMW iX5 hydrogen car throughout the world, including South Africa. The company views hydrogen cars as an addition to battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), not as a rivalry between the two technologies.

The iX5 Hydrogen pilot fleet is not meant for commercial use, but the German automaker has begun testing hydrogen-powered cars in South Africa. The hydrogen car trial was revealed during the regional meeting of the Hydrogen Council in Sandton, Johannesburg.

BMW has revealed that it will begin testing in collaboration with Anglo-American Platinum and Sasol. The Sasol BMW Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle, or Sasol BMW FCEV, is the name of the joint venture project. BMW and Sasol, a multinational integrated chemical and energy corporation, are working together to develop hydrogen fuel cell technology for electric vehicles.

According to Dr. Juergen Guldner, BMW Group General Program Manager, the company doesn’t see the hydrogen car as a rival to BEVs. Customers who travel frequently or do not have access to electric charging at home or work might find hydrogen cars to be the best option because they offer the benefits of electric driving together with the ability to recharge rapidly.

“BMW is ready to say goodbye to electric cars:”

False click bait. Article says opposite.

Just wait until THOSE start blowing up!

Thankfully I live very rural, so I won’t have to move if a neighbour starts parking one of them next door.

Y’ever see the aftermath of a hydrogen “malfunction”? I have.

Beat me to it.

The death scene was where the reporter tearfully said “Oh, the humanity.”

This expression is a quote from the news reporter Herbert Morrison in the year 1937.

As the Hindenburg neared the end of its very first flight, it caught fire. Because the Hindenburg was filled with hydrogen, it ignited in a huge fireball. People attempted to jump off to escape. Over 30 people died, and over 60 survived. The entire disaster was recorded on video, and Herbert Morrison can be heard reporting what is happening. He was very upset by the huge disaster, and exclaimed Oh, the humanity in horror.

Despite the dark origins of the quote, nowadays many people use the expression to call minor problems horrible problems.
From writingexplained.org

I also remember one version of the life of Howard Hughes where they showed him the prototype of the new steam car with pockets and channels for the hot steam. He took a wrench and threw it at the side. Blasting hot steam loudly escaped under pressure. “The project is cancelled.”

BMW brought over 6 cars years ago to California and these vehicles were regular combustion engines converted to burn hydrogen.....They currently have Hydrogen fueling at a handful of gas stations in California...personally I have always liked the idea...

The “big problem” seems to be the electric batteries explode when they make contact with salt water, which we are told is “highly unlikely”. There’s footage of one apartment garage with three burning cars during a flood in South Florida.

I keep thinking that the next big hurricane to hit there will be pretty explosive, since you’ve got A: Lefties with lots of money for electric cars plus B: expensive oceanfront properties.

How very 'PC' of them (and intellectually dishonest). /s

I like the idea from a standpoint of buying fuel at a fuel stop similar to buying gas.

Lately, though, I've been happy with our BEV largely because with our solar we can produce our own electricity to charge it for local driving. (Last year we drove it 26K miles, with 16K of those miles charged at home, and solar producing 83% of all the power we needed for the home and charging the EV combined). Obviously I still need to buy fuel or power for long trips (depending on which car I take). A hydrogen car can do that. But bonus points for me if instead of it being a hydrogen combustion car it's a HEV (hydrogen fuel cell) with a large battery. Since I can charge a battery fairly efficiently I'd like the HEV to have a large battery (think hybrid, but with hydrogen fuel cell instead of gasoline tank with engine). Thus I can continue doing most of my local driving for free and even the first 200 miles of a trip -- but quickly fuel up with hydrogen when on a trip. And maybe on the days I have excess solar I can run a hydrogen electrolyzer to build hydrogen gas for the next long trip (horribly inefficient, but might as well use the excess solar since it's free anyway and I have no other use for it if my home batteries and EV are charged). That way I can charge the H of my HEV for free at least for an every now and then long trip, after charging the battery and home.

As long as their engineers didn’t make the H tank a large capacitor (as the Germans did), it will be just fine.

However, I wouldn’t park ANY NG or H powered vehicle indoors.
