Top airlines rake in $33B from bag fees
FOX Business ^ | February 22, 2024 | Daniella Genovese

The top 20 global airlines hauled in more than $33 billion in revenue from bag fees last year, ..

That accounted for about 4.1% of global airline revenue in 2023. It was also an increase of 15% from the $29 billion the companies collected in 2022...

Baggage fees, according to the report, are seen as a "significant component of ancillary revenue"

...

It comes from checked baggage in the aircraft hold, added fees for heavy and extra-large bags and, in some instances, the price charged for larger carry-on bags.

It started "as an economic necessity" as airlines sought relief from the dramatic jump in fuel prices during the oil shock of 2007 and 2008, according to the report. In short order, major U.S. carriers, which previously offered two checked pieces with every fare, began charging for the first checked bag.

...

American upped how much it charges for a first bag checked at airport counters from $30 to $40 for domestic flights. Fees for bags checked online in advance increased from $30 to $35. The cost of all second bags rose from $40 to $45 for domestic flights.

People are paying? Seems like everyone is stuffing all kinds of carry-ons into the overhead compartments.

Some of my extended family now ship everything but a carry-on by UPS when they go on vacations. Not cheaper, but the stuff doesn’t get destroyed or stolen by baggage handlers.

I’m sure they’re killin” it if what I saw one time is common place.

Traveling with a co-worker, his bag was over weight so we quickly transferred enough into my bag and both were under.

All good right?

The next week while completing his digital travel documents revealed the airline STILL charged him for an overweight bag and he had to go round and round with them to get it corrected.

I never thought I’d see the day bus lines would rival airlines in customer service.....but it looks like it’s just about there.

Southwest allows two checked bags for free I believe. Probably missing out on more than a billion dollars annually. Maybe more.

And idiots like Shumer will complain about them, then the air lines will just increase the ticket price for EVERYONE, even if they aren’t checking bags.

I bring the largest rolling bag you can fit in the overhead.

I also bring a backpack with toiletries, laptop, change of clothes, money, etc. In case they want me to check a bag.

IF I can not fit it into those tow bags, I do not bring it.

“Buys new clothes when the ones he is wearing get dirty.”

Not exactly new...from a secondhand shop, where they’re cheap. Someone else’s armpit stains are there somewhere. ;)

Flew American Airlines 2 days ago and my bag was 55 pounds (5 pounds overweight). They charged $100 in addition to the $30 that I paid to check the bag. Would have been way cheaper to check a second bag.

We’ve been burned like that a couple of times and learned out lesson. We mainly fly Southwest now and they have a good baggage policy. Most of our flights are under two hours and we make do with carry-on bags.

Depends on where and why you’re going. I used to ship instrument, clothes, etc, via UPS there and back and carry as little as possible. Cheaper and easier.
