Dr. Phil Blasts Pandemic School Closures and Liberals of the View Still Don't Get It
Hot Air ^ | February 26, 2024 | John Sexton

Posted on 02/27/2024 4:54:55 AM PST by george76

Dr. Phil went on the View today to promote a) his new book and b) his new show. As a former daytime TV host, Dr. Phil seemed to get a lot of leeway from the ladies of the View who mostly seemed to be trying to help him promote his stuff. But that changed toward the end of the segment when the discussion turned to the influence of social media on children.

...

Dr. Phil very briefly made the case that, starting around 2008, smartphones led kids to become observers rather than participants, something which he connected to "the highest levels of depression, anxiety, loneliness and suicidality" since records started being kept. Had he stopped there the segment might have ended on a note of concern and mutual agreement. Instead he went on to say that closing schools for two years during the pandemic had made things even worse.

At this point Sunny Hostin (of course) jumped in to argue the school closures were aimed at saving kids' lives. She was backed up by Whoopi Goldberg who added, "Remember, we know a lot of folks who died during this."

"Not school children," Dr. Phil responded. To this, Whoopi suggested that the relative lack of deaths among kids was probably the result of closing schools and other measures. Ana Navarro also jumped in with a dumb gotcha question (see the clip below).

It's pretty amazing that in 2024 the liberals on the View still don't get that school closures were a disaster. At this point it's absolutely clear that pandemic learning loss was a disaster for kids, most of whom have not recovered from falling months behind. Last year the NY Times editorial board called it the "most damaging disruption" in the history of US education. Dr. Phil is right that this was a major misstep.

It's also well established at this point (and has been for a while) that the impact of COVID on children was far, far less than it was on older adults. The CDC puts the total US death toll around 1.1 million (from 2020 to 2023). The number of deaths for kids ages 0-17 over that time was less than 1,700, a small fraction of 1%. By July 2021 the CDC was urging schools to reopen even if all mitigation efforts weren't in place.

...

That was more than 2 1/2 years ago. Do the liberals on the View know any of this? It doesn't seem like it. Instead it's still an uphill battle to say what should be common knowledge by this point: School closures hurt children in a variety of ways and didn't keep them safer.

Here's Dr. Phil arguing the point and, in my view, easily winning it despite it being 3 to 1 against him.

...

GOLDBERG: "We know a lot of folks who died [from COVID.]"

DR. PHIL: "Not schoolchildren."

GOLDBERG: "Well, you know what? We're lucky!"

DR. PHIL: "They were the less vulnerable group and they suffered and will suffer more from the mismanagement of COVID than they will for the exposure of COVID and that's not an opinion — that's a fact."

The job of “The View” is to tell fat lesbians that they can sit at home and collect a paycheck.

I always considered “Dr. Phil” to be daytime trash tv, but after listening to an interview of him on Joe Rogan, I did a 180 on him. He’s very intelligent, thoughtful, and has common sense! I’d even say he’s a ‘conservative’ or at least an “honest” liberal like Joe.

[and Liberals of the View Still Don’t Get It]

Well, as with any subject “The View” “discusses” this is only true:

Sunday
Monday
Tuesday
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday
Saturday

(even if the show is not on, they still won’t understand ANYTHING properly)

“Whutcha TALKIN’ ‘bout, Dr. Phil?”

Completely and totally new concepts to the “ladies” of the View.

He’s a very intelligent man, however since he was discovered by the Oprah, I’ve always suspected he was beholdened to her in regards to her politics.

My wife went for a time watching his show regularly.

I noticed a couple of things about the broken flawed messed up people and their situations he has on his show......99% of the time they are White people.

Only rarely are they Hispanic and even rarer are the black.

Other thing is, in all the shows I have watched his advice on how to correct a situation or behavior, never has he ever mentioned Faith as a way to cope and overcome......not once that I recall.

And in 1969 the Hong Kong Flu killed around 4 million people including about 1 million children, I was almost one of them at 9 years old and have NEVER had any type of Flu since. These hags should be locked for FELONY MISINFORMATION.

He’s of the left, so he doesn’t get it either:

You can’t take a stance undermining their religion with mere conjecture or they’ll swarm & attack in defense of the irrational status quo to protect both the system and their beliefs.

I don’t believe that he takes seriously his allegations, or he would understand what he’s up against.

smh

I saw them talking for a moment on some show. War room I guess. They don’t speak logically. A lot of middle school level emotional conjecture

It was sick

Illogical and absent of facts.

Some women at work, nurses, talking smack about a coworker who had Covid. ‘Bla bla bla why didn’t she tell us? We wouldn’t have gone around visiting family!’

She was supposed to have quarantined AND personally notify everyone AND whatever else they dreamed up. She said she was asymptomatic then took the test she couldn’t have spread it. ‘Oh, nope. You can spread it without a fever, no coughing just be having it!’

They said ‘you can get it when you’re not symptomatic’. That’s like The View. Just facts they make up like Reagan talked about.

The Covid lady asks ‘did anyone get infected’.

“Well no”

The View talk is the way a lot of women talk

American public education was already failing to adequately educate kids before the pandemic. Closing the schools was a disaster not only because kids were not being adequately educated by hastily contrived and poorly implemented distance learning, but they were also being deprived of essential socialization. For a year or more kids were socially isolated and lived in a media fueled panic about how COVID was going to kill us all. Now that they are back in school, kids are being steeped in the imminent climate apocalypse hoax and bombarded with insane gender bending propaganda. Upward of 20% of school age kids now think they are the “wrong” sex or groomed to adopt some gender fluid ideology. We have lost a generation.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Ping to both this thread and the link at post 16. I missed that article last May.

Do you think that having had a severe case of the Hong Kong flu at age 9 and then never having any kind of flu since is because your body built up such a strong immunity against influenza? My mother was a young child during the pandemic of 1918. My siblings, and I have always wondered if the fact that she was never sick with any kind of cold or flu till she passed on at age 96 was because of the powerful immune response required to overcoming that 1918 flu.
