Victor Davis Hanson: American Paralysis and Decline
American Greatness ^ | 29 Feb, 2024 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 02/29/2024 5:38:43 AM PST by MtnClimber

Societies do not always collapse from a lack of wealth, invasion, or natural catastrophes. But they are so paralyzed by their fear that the road to salvation becomes too painful to even contemplate.

"We can bear neither our diseases nor their remedies.”

So shrugged the ancient historian Livy (59 B.C.- A.D. 17) of the long decline of Roman national character that, in his age, finally ended the Roman Republic.

Like a patient whose medicine proves worse than the disease, Livy lamented that the Romans knew that they had become corrupt and lawless.

But the very contemplation of the hard medicine needed for restoration—and the furious reaction that would meet the remedy—made it impossible to save the patient.

America is nearing such an impasse.

We know that no state can long exist after opening its borders to over 7 million illegal aliens, requiring neither background checks nor legality.

The recent murder of a Georgia female jogger by an illegal alien and the savage beating of New York policemen by similar others hardly merit media attention.

Everyone knows that neither new appropriations nor new laws are needed to secure the border as it was in 2020.

Instead, we could just stop suicidal catch-and-release, deport lawbreakers, privilege the legal over the illegal immigrant, demand would-be refugees apply for asylum first in their native countries, finish the border wall, and pressure Mexico to stop undermining the territorial integrity of its northern neighbor.

But then we shrug, “We can’t do that”—paralyzed in fear of being smeared as “xenophobic,” “nativist,” or “racist.”

So this generation apparently feels that it can endure the collateral damage of daily assaults on American citizens, the near bankruptcy of our cities, and 100,000 fentanyl deaths per year—but certainly not the idea that it is somehow not politically correct or compassionate.

IMHO, the main problem in America is we're losing what we gained in culture from the First and Second Great Awakenings. Instead of putting value on our improved culture, we let the loud talkers tell us "diversity is our strength". And I'm not talking about race. I'm saying we should go back to expecting civility and responsibility from everybody regardless of race. We should go back to telling people it's good to be in a country that, at least in the recent past, lead the way in cultural improvement throughout the world. And we can do that again.

But only if we get back to loving God and loving people.

It's a long way from "We have nothing to fear but fear itself."

When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion - when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing - when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors - when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you - when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice - you may know that your society is doomed.

Did Hitler “restore” Weimar Germany, or transform it into something else?

Our leadership does not even pretend to offer restoration.

How many have the courage to believe that this illegal immigrant deserves nothing more than sentencing before a judge, assuming his country of origin will not take him back for trial as a murderer? Even in that case, a judge should have say on whether such a transfer can result in justice.

Government should be limited to governance. The US Constitution tried to do so. Society, alone, is responsible for its own lack of character.

In 376, the west Roman emperor opened the border to.allow the visagoths, who we’re fleeing the Huns, into the empire. Ten years later the visagoths defeated the Roman army and killed the emperor. They were followed by the Huns and a plethora of barbarian tribes. In 476, the western empire was gone.

“So this generation apparently feels “

Half the country feels that way.
The other half is ready to rumble.
Either can’t survive with other.

That’s why National Divorce is the answer-
No Civil War - just Civil Separation.

We live our way, let them live their way-
The Geography would be a simple agreement.
Good fences make good neighbors.

“We live our way, let them live their way-”

If only. Won’r wprk because they are not satisfied with peaceful coexistence. Their evil nature dictates that they must dominate.

The remedy is for Trump to declare that we have been invaded when he takes the oath of office on January 20, 2024 and suspend habeas corpus to deport all of the illegal economic migrants who invaded us. I don't expect him to announce that before Election Day, as it wouldn't be wise to do so. No one can seriously believe that we are a nation of laws when the borders are open to all invaders, elections are obviously rigged, but the citizens have no "standing" to object in the courts.

Ping! Out to the Victor Davis Hanson list

Societies do not always collapse from a lack of wealth, invasion, or natural catastrophes.

Most often, they know what is destroying them. But they are so paralyzed by their fear that the road to salvation becomes too painful to even contemplate.

So they implode gradually, then suddenly.

I have been summoned for jury duty in feral district court. It is nothing more than compelled service to support the farce of this failed system we are subject to. The system demands respect but does not even care that respect is only earned by being respectable and it is not respectable. It just demands and expects instant compliance.

We are taxed to give to others who will harm us, we are compelled to serve the master's farce, we are constrained by his senseless laws and proclamations, justice is not, criminals are let go while innocents are punished severely and we are ruled by people who don't know us or hate us.

We get little or noting in return. Facilities are a shambles including roads, bridges and buildings. Law enforcement isn't in many places, justice is a joke, most of our problems in getting things done stem from goovernment action or inaction. We bear the burden but hardly any of the benefits.

This is not a constitutional republic any longer, it is tyranny.

VDH, as usual, writes an excellent article about the woes of America but he does not offer many solutions. I think he is fearful to write about what the solution might have to be. It took many decades to bring America to this boiling point and a single term (4 years) of DJT’s return is not going to fix the problems, not unless gallows are part of the solution.
