I suspect he gets swayed by flattery and fawning by job seekers. He needs to focus on people with proven results, ideological consistency, and unassailable convictions.

Trump is a practical person and using obviously insincere people in business is factored in the choice equation as necessary or useful etc. As the wanton women say, flattery will get you anywhere. That is not necessarily a good thing for them and can be fun and useful when used in reverse. Unassailable convictions are not necessarily permanent. Witness the solid politicians who have shortchanged their voters for personal gain.

I think it had more to do with trying to build a coalition. He wanted to try to co-opt the Establishment rather than waging an all out war with them. Considering how entrenched the deep state was at the time, it was probably necessary to take that approach.
