Canada ranked last in access to primary health care in a survey of 10 high-income countries released by the Canadian Institute for Health Information on Thursday.
Eighty-six per cent of Canadians aged 18 and older said they had a doctor or a place they usually go for medical care in the 2023 survey by the Commonwealth Fund.
That's down from 93 per cent of those surveyed in 2016 — and means that an estimated four million Canadian adults did not have access to primary care last year, the study said.
The percentage of people who had access to primary care was lower than in any of the other countries surveyed, which included Australia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The average among all 10 countries was 93 per cent.
The Netherlands had the best ranking, with 99 per cent of adults living there reporting they had access to primary care in 2023.
The United States performed only slightly better than Canada, with 87 per cent of American adults saying they had primary care access.
Canada also ranked last in ability to get a same or next-day appointment to see a doctor or nurse.

Cost me a potential $30,000/yr in potential income to have a nothing healthcare system.
Talk about lying with statistics.
Too many invaders. And they milk the system for all it’s worth.
No wonder wealthy Canadians, for the past several decades, still come south of the border to pay out of pocket medical care costs. They know at least they’ll have a better chance of survival with shorter waiting times and better quality medicine, especially surgery.
No kidding. Illinois is finally cutting back the number of illegals on Medicaid - by about 6k people.
A drop in the bucket. Things have gotten far worse since I started seeing docs for a chronic condition we discovered I have as a teen.
Doctor's office...MRI...operating room in 11 days.
Try that in Canada...or Britain.
But he came to the US.
It was big news up north...very controversial.
okay I thought...maybe I should get some...
but I've gotten along fine without it and it has such a horrible rebound effect on your sinuses, I just said no....
this is a new age....we need to stop using pharacueticals like they are free as water...
Big pharma has suckered us into being on all these meds, OTC or prescribed...
perhaps we don't need to see the drs that much...maybe we can figure out our own health...
I had my yearly medicare checkup, mostly to get my meds renewed, and the office charged over $1000 for a quick exam over maybe 15"....
I'm just tired of this crap
no I didn't pay that....medicare and tricare...but the idea of wasting that much money for 15" is lunacy.
I remember the Left trying to shame the US because Canada’s healthcare was so much better than ours.
Have they ever been right on an issue?
Nazi Canuckistan living up to the Nazi Standard!
Anyway, how's a good time to invest in medicial facilities in Cancun. If you're going to get a procedure done, you'll fly to Cancun, stay at a resort and then you'll be back home after you've recovered.
Eventually, we will have Medicare for all.
So if you have money, you'll have to go elsewhere to get treatment. And many of our doctors will be forced to relocate if they want to get paid.
And the “compassion” excuse ..”we need to help others from less fortunate places” holds no water when there seems to be no limit on how many people come in. That’s not fair to those of us here first.
I’m surprised Illinois is actually cutting back. Then again chicago is a nightmare.
BTW...
I hope you get the treatment you need!
“charged over $1000 for a quick exam over maybe 15”..”
Medicare itself would reimburse a small part of that — probably $50 - $150. You can look up the physician fee schedules.
*Anyway, how’s a good time to invest in medicial facilities in Cancun.*
What’s wrong with our own Indian reservations. Total free market. Surgeons can drive home for dinner.
But it’s FREE!!!
I “inherited” my doctor.
When my Dad died, he agreed to take me as a patient.
My mother lost her Dr when the doctor packed up and went back to India. And had quite a bit of trouble finding another. (Victoria, B.C.)
Kingston is a University town. Queens has a big medical school. And hundreds line up for a chance to be taken one by one of four new family doctors ?
On paper, you're right. But try telling that to Joe Biden.
Not having a doctor you regularly go to is not the same as not having access to medical care.
