Speaker Mike Johnson Violates Hastert Rule in Passing $1.2 Trillion Government Funding Plan

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) passed a massive $1.2 trillion government funding plan despite the objections of the majority of House Republicans, violating the Hastert Rule and crossing the Rubicon into dangerous territory for the future of his speakership.

House Republicans enacted the longstanding rule to prohibit Republican Speakers from colluding with Democrats to pass legislation. But Johnson sent the bill to the Senate despite the objections of 112 Republican colleagues, with only 101 Republican votes in favor, although Johnson and his leadership team applied significant pressure.

Johnson also broke a House rule intended to give lawmakers time to review legislation before a vote. The 1,000-plus page spending bill was presented to members before 3:00 a.m. Eastern on Thursday morning, less than 36 hours before the vote.

And MTG is the only member with the balls to call him on it.

Why is that? Let’s hear some attempts to justify voting for a Democrat bill filled with pork and woke.

They might as well elect Amy Schumer as Speaker if all they’re going to do is rubber-stamp bills written by her cousin Chuckie.

Under House rules, the speaker schedules floor votes on pending legislation.

The Hastert rule says that the speaker will not schedule a floor vote on any bill that does not have majority support within their party—even if the majority of the members of the House would vote to pass it.

“They might as well elect Amy Schumer as Speaker if all they’re going to do is rubber-stamp bills written by her cousin Chuckie.”

That would be funny if not for the fact that many Republican representatives would be all for it.

Shut down government if the dems don’t pass independent spending packages. Seriously, if people can’t get by without government services it tells me our government is too BIG and involved in thins best left to the private sector.

When they get rid of him, then with all the resignations, House control will pass to the Dems; if you think $1.2 trillion is a lot, wait to you see the spending the Dems will put up and pass.

When Johnson became speaker, all the Republican party groupies thought he was the savior.

What a joke. Another GD lawyer turned professional politician who looks like a 60 year old little boy. Pathetic.

We need leaders, not lawyers!

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA)

I gave him a fair chance as speaker. Now, I believe he needs to go. We keep firing Speakers until someone can give us a balanced budget and helps the Nation.

EXACTLY.

NOTHING THAT HAPPENS THIS YEAR MEANS ANYTHING OTHER THAN TRUMP WINS OR TRUMP LOSES.

NOTHING!!!

Passing this money avoids upheaval. The outcome of upheaval is never predictable and Trump leads in every poll. Not just pro Trump polls. All of them. When you are ahead you do not tell people to create an explosion.

You run out the clock.

Passing this bill was a good thing. It is about that substance created from nothingness called money.

Do not change Speakers over this.

Although originally well intentioned, the Hastert Rule has been effectively dead for over a decade now.
