Neither of which I believe is true, the simplest answer is usually true. Putin has often lamented the loss of power and prestige the fall of the Soviet Union caused to him and Russia.
He invaded Ukraine not to fight NATO expansion, nazis , soros, or the globalhomos, but to try and regain some of that. Ukraine was his last shot and he took it.
Now that things are not going as planned, his dream of a greater Russia, has been replaced with an existential threat to himself and his power.
NATO has expanded beyond anything imagined with Finland and Sweden now members, western military industrial capacities expanding, and his army locked in a slug fest with what was a much smaller country with a small army.
Though I won’t say he is losing, he most certainly is not winning.
If the war continues at this pace or worse the Russians suffer reversals, he not Russias existence is threatened.
Revolution and toppling of dictators is not a new thing for Russia, and putin knows this.
