Environmentalists cheered the announcement as a 'breath of fresh air'.

The final coal-fired power plants in New England are slated to shutter in the coming years, making it the second region to phase out the energy source that powered the U.S. economy for decades.

In an announcement late last month, New Hampshire-based power provider Granite Shore Power said it had reached an agreement with federal officials to shutter its Schiller Station in 2025 and its Merrimack Station by mid-2028. The action underscores the region's and, more broadly, the nation's steady march toward a future dominated by green energy. Environmental activists have called for this change for years — energy advocates have warned against it.

I love New England, but it has been ruined by retiring New Yorkers and Bostonians.

The only way this would make sense is if they put some small nuclear reactors in their place, such as the Westinghouse AP300’s.

But that would make too much sense.

We had three hundred years worth of coal to utilize while fusion reactors get figured out.

However, the announcement that another U.S. region is on a glide path to a coal-free future earned heavy criticism from some experts who noted the importance of having baseload, dispatchable power generation. While renewable sources like wind and solar are intermittent, or heavily dependent on weather conditions, coal, natural gas and nuclear can quickly be turned on in times of high demand.

This should read Base Load and Dispatchable Power. They are different things.

Base load plants are going to run at full power nearly all the time.

A nuclear power plant will take days to start up and reach full power as will a coal plant.

Any plant that uses steam turbines to generate electricity must be warmed up slowly or suffer damage.

Coal plants in the past (30+ years ago) could be used a dispatchable power. These small old plants would be set as "Spinning Reserve" during periods of high demand. This means that the plant would at operating temperature with its turbine spinning but unloaded.

These old plants where less efficient and did not have pollution controls.

During the Clinton years these old plants lost their EPA exemption for plants that were old and operated infrequently.

Dispatchable power today is primarily Natural Gas Turbines.

These plants can be kept warm and be be brought on-line remotely. Many are also completely unmanned.

The Environmental Extremest even want to do away with Gas Turbines.

Half of Maine lost power during the two most recent snow/wind/ice storms. Since “green” sources won’t be producing power during such events, the downing of power lines won’t matter.

*** power plants in New England ***

Tells me nothing. What Power Pool is this and is it interconnected with other power pools around it that will not shut down their coal fired plants.
I am connected with the SPP and there are lots of coal cars hauling coal to the AEP and plants farther south in other states. Most of Texas has it’s own power pool, ERCOT.

Before I retired, I made a pretty good living off of commissioning new power plants. Dependent on the type of equipment employed, I made the most at Coal fired plants, followed by nuclear (upgrades), followed by gas fired. Good thing I retired!

The irony is that it’s New England, where it’s colder than Hillary’s eyes. Watch, they’ll be clamping down on wood stoves too.

You are what you vote.

A student pilot of mine was returning to Nashua on a solo flight and inadvertently flew through the exhaust plume of the Merrimack station. Smelling smoke in the cockpit he declared an emergency, "Mayday, mayday!" and ATC diverted him to land at Manchester.

Other than being totally wrong, he did exactly what he was trained to do.

That ‘green’ energy will be the mold growing on the once-numerous engines of this country’s economy.

They will finally find out the true cost of oreing, milling and slagging and machining steel. Gonna be a rea trick with them windmills.
