Just got back from Singapore and was truly impressed with how clean, safe orderly and prosperous the place is, and was wondering how they do it.

This article is a list of their policies. I wish we did the same.

Item 6 of his speech pretty much summarizes their approach, but the whole thing is worth reading.

"6 To tackle ongoing and persistent issues, we adopt a multi-pronged approach. Legislation and enforcement are critical to help us tackle the "inconsiderate behaviour of a small number of people" who are not as socially responsible, and to shape social norms for the wider population."

What do you think?

“to shape social norms” — Nazi Germany did this, too. Trains ran on time, that’s the metaphor.

Do all the fines you want for messing up public space, and if neighborhoods make HOAs they all sign onto, well and good.

But “shape social norms” is a dead collectivist giveaway. It gives government too much power. It’s too steep a price to pay for clean. I saw the legendary clean subways in the 1987 Soviet Union — impressive, but at what cost in freedoms?

Caning for minor infractions will do the trick. Muslim countries will cut off your hand for stealing too. Vlad the Impaler did not have any stealing either. He would lay out gold in the roadside and dare anyone to steal it.

Yeah barbaric societies will do that sort of thing.

I loved Singapore. I bet they don’t practice DEI either. I bet Singaporeans don’t cry “racism” every time a law demands responsibilities from the citizen.

Lots of pushback on this thread against Singapore. But seriously, there is more freedom, security, cleanliness and safety there than in most US cities.

Don’t they arrest people for polluting and not disposing of trash properly?

They have an F1 race in Singapore each year and each year they have to get special clearance for the drivers for the visor tearaways as they would usually be jailed for tearing it away and throwing it on the street.

Singapore was always one of my very favorite travel stops. The key is the benevolent near dictatorship, process, no quarter is given for violation. Loved to stroll Orchard Street and go to the food court where you ordered from any number of establishments, paid in advance, gave no name, were given no number or any other identifier and yet your food always arrived at your table. Fascinating.

When they opened the new trains people could not restrain themselves from throwing their gum on the pavement and in the coaches. They were warned and then you could not buy a stick of gum in Singapore.

I stayed in Singapore for weeks at a time on business and never once found the standards of behavior or compliance offensive or a burden. If you behave with respect for others and decency you will have zero problems.

I loved the place for its order.

I don’t know if it is still so, but in 82 and 85 the place was absolutely spotless...everywhere.

Y'all are missing the point. Singapore is the ultimate Confucian city. I wish I had the time to go into all the details, but a "normal" Western republic, the kind America has tried to be when the leftists weren't ripping it to shreds, is based on Aristotle's Ethics and Politics for individual living and societal organization respectively. East Asian societies, when they have not been overcome by either fascism or communism, are based on Confucius' Analects and the Doctrine of the Mean. A Confucian society is a collection of interconnected hierarchies, where those who are superior take responsibility for those beneath them, those who are inferior accept the rules of those above them, and everyone in the group is loyal to the success of the group. There is no individual freedom, but the success of the society is predicated on the willingness of the members to follow their role and the duties the role requires. Singapore is the best example of this, but postwar Japan and South Korea come close, and Viet Nam is rediscovering its Confucian roots as the sway of communism becomes less and less--the one place where it isn't showing signs of returning is, ironically, China: it's turned from pure communist to authoritarian mercantilist, but that's a topic for another day.

I love all tbe ignoramus’ replies.

Singapore is one of the wealthiest per capita homogenous nations on earth.

It’s incredibly capitalist and yet despite the wealth similar to the Arabs-Singapore contributes virtually nothing to the advancement of mankind.

There is nothing in our lives that hails from Singapore but we want to be Singapore.

Why would that be the case?

Coming in second behind Japan in vo0luntary mask compliance and steeped in tradition. Singapore is an authoritarian nation where imagination, creativity and subsequent innovation otherwise known as applied intelligence take a back seat to repressive government.

The wealthy do all the drugs that they can afford while the poor live in shanty shacks on the water.

I’ve been to Singapore!!!!

By that I mean the Singapore that they want me to see.

I think there's no way the cities that would benefit from these policies are going to vote for politicians that will pass and enforce them.

I lived there over 8 years. It is easy to see why expats and tourist love the area. Safe, clean etc. Especially for Americans who haven't seen the rest of the world its a safe, cultural Adult Disney world.

But, like most things. Its a mirage. There is no freedom of speech, no right of assemble, no freedom of the press, private land property is limited, you can't blame other religions nor talk bad about them, no gun rights, etc etc. Its a gop/libertarian paradise in many ways. The companies import brains and import cheap foreign labor to handle the hard work.

The kids are certainly world beaters up to college, then they fade away to the rat race that Singapore is. The culture there produces conformity, docility, and submission, the rebels get beaten down. They will never produce a Donald Trump or persons who standout in the world. For all the discomfort and hate in America, we happen to raise kids who go out and create interesting things and ideas.
