New Orleans police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick wants gun-free zones within the city where even licensed concealed carriers would be barred from carrying for self-defense.
4WWL reported that Kirkpatrick is pushing the zones in response to the constitutional carry bill signed by Gov. Jeff Landry (R) on March 5, 2024.
“New Orleans is unique. And this is not a one-size-fits-all bill. And so, what would apply and maybe be perfectly acceptable in a different part of the state of Louisiana, it’s not going to be effective for the entire city of New Orleans,” Kirkpatrick said. “Too much gun violence as it is in the city. We’ve made great strides. This will reverse the strides.”

In the early sixties my parents took me to New Orleans. There was a cop on the corner looking very alert. I asked him something about safety and he said, “You’re okay so long as you stay on this main street. But go a few blocks that way, (pointing) or that way and you’ll be in trouble.”
Another time my mom pointed out the dike was above our heads. I though, no way I’d live here. It was dirty, smelly and totally unpeeling. I’m sure it hasn’t aged any better than it looked then.
Anne, you should strive for a Crime Free Zone, that way you can achieve your other goal.
Good reason to stay out of that hell hole as nothing but trash is there.
It is how they take over. They allow un-checked violence to ruin so many things.

A gun free zone has never stopped me from carrying...Except a metal detector. And I’ve not been thru one in years.
Well golly. Now I know where to go for vacation. Gun free zones are the safest places to be.... Especially chocolate cities.

Law abiding citizens will righteously defendnd themselves from street crime and he’ll look like the idiot he is. These self defense actions will make the news and he’ll be seen as the criminal enablemening looser.
He KNOWS that an armed populace will solve the crime and without the crime he will not have a platform.

The idiots on the New Orleans city council tried to limit handgun carry laws before - and got slapped down by the State Supreme Court. The city can't brush aside state statutes. But, that was twenty plus years ago, I guess this new bunch... having failed to learn from the past... is heading down that same road.

I forget... is Calliope the boundary between Uptown and the Garden District? Well, no matter - they did draw a neat box around the area that is causing concern, in terms of tourism.
No gun-free zone in New Orleans East? Well, I guess that might be a bridge too far.
It's been a while since I checked the Revised Statutes, but I remember something about Louisiana treating vehicles like extensions of the owner's residence. If you could legally have a firearm at home, in the car was also good.
