DOJ’s refusal to turn over Hur tapes to Congress sets up a contempt fight

The Department of Justice’s decision this week to refuse to turn over the audio tapes of President Joe Biden’s interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur could set up a new fight between the administration and Congress.

The refusal marks the second time the DOJ has declined to provide the audio tapes to Congress, though it has turned over the transcripts of the interview.

The department first refused to turn the tapes over earlier this month, citing insufficient justification and accusing the House Republicans of political motivations—concerns the DOJ reiterated in its letter this week to the Judiciary and Oversight Committees.

“We have repeatedly invited the Committees to identify how these audio recordings from law enforcement files would serve the purposes for which you say you want them,” Assistant Attorney General Carlos Uriarte wrote to congressional investigators.

The DOJ has a laughable deficiency of self-awareness.

After how Jack Smith redacted documents to hide that the DOJ, Biden’s counsel, the intel groups, NARA, FBI, etc all colluded to try to entrap Trump on the “classified documents” case..... and how the DOJ altered documents it submitted to the FISA court.... etc ad nauseum.....

Congress should tell the DOJ that without the actual audio recording there is no reason for anybody in this country to believe what is on the transcript.

From here on out - because the whole stinkin’ Deep State has proved they are always liars - everybody has to show all their work, all the time.

If congress had the authority to get Trump’s tax returns (as supported by the courts) seems like the audio tapes are less intrusive since according to the DOJ the transcripts match the audio, so why fight it?

The only reason to fight it is if the transcripts don’t match the audio.

And the DOJ would be caught ONCE AGAIN lying their asses off.

Well, if multiple bogus charges against Donald Trump aren't election interference, I cannot fathom an argument that the actual audio recordings of the sitting president can be considered election interferance.

We’ve seen this arrogance before, ala the Obama administration. And, of course, NO consequences were seen. I pray this time it’s different, but it will take a miracle.

You don’t get to do that when you’re under subpoena.

I donate to Judicial Watch.

They're on top of this with FOIA from the beginning. There's a federal judge that blocked the efforts of the DOJ to delay the release.

Judicial Watch needs our support. They put out reports of their efforts and accomplishments that go unnoticed.

They make more effort and accomplish more for your rights than the entire Congress.

While Congress is fighting each other over how much money to give Ukraine, JW is getting really important work done on our behalf.

Check JW out. I have no connections of any kind with them.

Just look at that foreigner Myorkas giving Congressional inquires the finger because he knows there is no cost to breaking the law for policy.
Pence of Schiff Mike Johnson will not do a damn thing with the only power of the purse, what an @sshole !!!

The department first refused to turn the tapes over earlier this month, citing insufficient justification

Congress is not required to provide DOJ with any justification. They should be held in contempt for refusal to comply with congressional subpoenas. Operational funds should be withheld until DOJ complies. They have no right to decide what information congress has access to.

Accusing the House Republicans of political motivations—concerns the DOJ reiterated in its letter this week to the Judiciary and Oversight Committees.

Political motivations are just as meaningless as DOJs opinions. No one is asking your opinion DOJ you have been ordered to comply and have no authority to say no. Nut up or face consequences.

“We have repeatedly invited the Committees to identify how these audio recordings from law enforcement files would serve the purposes for which you say you want them,”

Its not your call DOJ nor does congress have to justify anything to you. They don't work for you they work for the voters as you do. You are not the gate keeper nor the key master you are not running the country, you are just public servants and one of the duties we've assigned you is to comply with congressional oversite.

The arrogance of the DOJ is astounding.
