We all know what tiny homes are, but have you ever heard of a skinny home?
What originally began as plans to construct a single-family residence in Washington, DC, suddenly shrank when the city unexpectedly changed its zoning laws.
“The developer bought the property, thinking it could be a four-story home that was 15 feet wide; but the city changed the zoning laws, so he had to build this skinny home in its place,” says listing agent Jennifer Young, of Keller Williams Chantilly Ventures. “It had to be scaled down to almost half the width. This home is now just 6 feet wide.”
Listed for $581,903, the slimmed-down, newly built residence has a reimagined design with one bedroom with 1.5 baths. And building the home was not without its obstacles.

Originally hitting the market in July 2023 for $799,900, the petite property, which has garnered national attention, received its latest price reduction last month.

it would be nice if the story explained what the change was.
The cost is for the location. Just outside of DC you can buy a much nicer condo for half that price in a pretty good neighborhood.

There are metal bars on the house’s first floor front window. That shows a shocking lack of trust in the neighborhood!
I have no interest in buying that house. I demand that those bars by removed anyway.

Houses are expensive, because nobody wants to live in a cheap neighborhood where they will get robbed, or worse.
Living in a honeycomb like they do in Japan is right around the corner. The “elites” will need more land to build their mansions.
At one time in the south people built their homes at port cities from old style wood shipping containers. These were rather common. They were 8 ft wide , had a special name.

Where Did the Name “Shotgun House” Originate?
So what about that name? The history behind the meaning of a shotgun isn’t crystal clear. It’s common to hear that the name came about because if all the doors of the house were open, you could fire a gun through the front door, and the bullet could exit out the back door without hitting anything.
The bars on the window means a burglar is going to have to jump the fence to break in.
There are videos on youtube about mini apartments...300 sq ft and less...in NYC and Tokyo. Pretty interesting.
Intimate, but fat friends could be a problem.
Viewed a lot, a curiousity. Maybe sell around $99K. What an unappealing neighborhood.

I can get by with an 8 foot wide room, but 6 feet is just too narrow....
And if 6 Ft is the outside dimension, then if you have decent insulation, your inside walls are going to be no more than 5’3” apart.
I added a little work cubicle in the garage. At 6 feet wide there is still 6 inches left to park the van. It is perfect for my office space - but I can’t imagine trying to live in something this narrow!
Could buy a motor home instead. Although I doubt they have RV parks in the DC area.
I visited friends that had parked their MH at a nice RV park while he finished up a project. The commute to downtown was only 20 minutes.
It was well kept and had a place for long term residents (some had lived there for years) and a section for short-term (one-month minimum IIRC) parking spots.
They were there for about 6 months and had become good friends with their neighbors. It was a pretty cool place.
