Facing Russian Advance, a Top Ukrainian General Paints a Bleak Picture

Ukraine’s military is confronting a “critical” situation in the country’s northeast, facing troop shortages as it tries to repel a Russian offensive that has been advancing for several days, a top Ukrainian general said on Monday.

Russian troops surged across the border last week to open a new line of attack near Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city after Kyiv, capturing at least nine settlements and villages and forcing thousands of civilians to flee.

“The situation is on the edge,” Gen. Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, said in a video call from a bunker in Kharkiv. “Every hour this situation moves toward critical.”

His bleak assessment echoed those of other Ukrainian officers in recent days, that the country’s military prospects were dimming. In addition to being outnumbered, the Ukrainians face critical shortages of weapons, especially artillery ammunition, and $60.8 billion worth of arms from the United States — approved three weeks ago after months of congressional gridlock — has barely begun to arrive.

Like most Ukrainian officials and military experts, General Budanov said he believes the Russian attacks in the northeast are intended to stretch Ukraine’s already thin reserves of soldiers and divert them from fighting elsewhere.

That is exactly what is happening now, he acknowledged. He said the Ukrainian army was trying to redirect troops from other front line areas to shore up its defenses in the northeast, but that it had been difficult to find the personnel.

“All of our forces are either here or in Chasiv Yar,” he said, referring to a Ukrainian stronghold about 120 miles farther south that Russian troops have assaulted in recent weeks. “I’ve used everything we have. Unfortunately, we don’t have anyone else in the reserves.”

The only question is where the Uke line breaks first. This could be all over in a month.

Perhaps. Although Steiner's assault could bring everything under control.

Already he’s in a bunker in Kharkiv. That city, last week, was the ultimate goal before the the fall rains and snow. Kharkiv could be under siege in a week.

“Military analysts say that Russia has yet to commit large numbers of troops to the offensive — probably deploying just a few thousand soldiers “

It seems that Ukraine is facing a shortage of troops to counter the Russian offensive. If Russia commits a large force, we might see major movement along the front line soon.

Probably not, since most of their howitzers have been ‘liquidated’. Maybe make paper planes out of the money?

Ukraine never had an unlimited number of men for the ‘job’. You could make that case for Russia as well. Since day one, if you follow the trends, I’d say well over 1-million young Russians have packed and exited Russia (probably to never return).

I would guess at present...probably in the range of half-a-million Ukrainian men in Germany...right age groups, and they have zero intent of returning to participate in the war.

Yep, saw that. Again, all these dedicated peaceniks who smugly drove around with the “Stop the Endless Wars” bumper sticker on their car have been completely silent, proving the hypocritical left don’t really care about peace except when they can use it as a cudgel to bludgeon any Republican with it.

Why have they not been screaming for peace in Ukraine? Why has there been absolutely no discussion of a diplomatic solution or a negotiated settlement? There has not even been so much as a whisper of talk of ending this futile war. Where are all the Marxists? Yeah, I get that Soros and Gates are funding the Palestine Marxists, but if these people genuinely care about peace then why are they silent about Ukraine?

How tragic that so many will die. Apparently the fighting will continue until the very last Ukrainian.

In the trenches the Ukes are throwing bundles of hundred dollar bills in lieu of bullets.

Billions of dollars were supposedly used to build a layered defense all along the border. The Uke have no fortifications! It’s as if Ray Nagin was in charge of building them. Just like pre Katrina New Orleans, where the money ended up in corrupt Louisiana politicians pockets.

Why have they not been screaming for peace in Ukraine?

Because Russians have proven themselves to be brutal in their occupation and outspoken of their intentions after victory.

Pavel Gubarev, Russia's "DPR" figure in Donetsk, states their intent towards Ukrainians: "We aren't coming to kill you, but to convince you. But if you don't want to be convinced, we'll kill you. We'll kill as many as we have to: 1 million, 5 million, or exterminate all of you."

"We aren't coming to kill you, but to convince you. But if you don't want to be convinced, we'll kill you
