Based on his abuse of other women, there is no reason to think he has not emotionally raped and absolutely shattered any personal strenghth Hilary ever might have had. He probably conned her early on into thinking that he's the best she could ever do, and that she's lucky to be with him. Then as she became involved in the criminal acts and a beneficiary of them as well, leaving him was not an option. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
