Law officers surround home in Dent County

Federal and local officers are on the 'situation.'

SALEM, Mo. (10:45 a.m.) -- Federal law officers closed down a highway north of Salem Thursday and were still involved in an “enforcement operation'' at a home outside the city at mid-morning Friday. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and U.S. Customs were called in to deal with a “situation'' at a home north of Salem, said Larry Scott, an ATF spokesman in Kansas City.

Scott would not provide other details but said the Dent County sheriff and fire departments are assisting. Missouri 68 was closed about three miles north of Salem. Scott said the ATF would not release any additional information while the situation was ongoing.

Scott said agents were called in about 2 p.m. Thursday to serve the warrant, which was ordered out of the eastern district of Missouri.

“Number one is everyone's safety out here,'' Scott said. “And that is a big concern with everyone involved, and we'll try to resolve this in a peaceful conclusion.''

Scott would not identify the homeowner for whom the warrant was issued nor would he say if the person was in the home Friday.

“All we're saying is that we had to serve this warrant,'' Scott said.
