One of the World Trade Center Towers collpases after being struck earlier by a terrorsit attack using a hijacked airliner.

Within the half hour, the second building also collapsed as hundreds of fire fighters and emergency workers crowded in to help the victims of the 1st collpase.

When I saw the towers go down, I started wondering how that could happen if they were struck midway up the side. (and just who was flying those planes? I can't believe a commercial airline pilot would do that, even at gunpoint.)

We'll no doubt hear all kinds of conspiracy theories about bombs in the basement, but my thinking is much simpler than that: Burning jet fuel and other combustibles inside the towers fell down the elevator shafts and continued burning at the base of the buildings, grossly weakening the structural steel and concrete.

Now my question is this: do structural engineers take into account burning material falling through these shafts during a fire of any kind, and is there any way to prevent the consequences?

Easy, citizen. Think about what you're saying. This has nothing to do with a missle defense system, and at times of war blaming a large part of your own countrymen is counterproductive to solving this mess.

Yes, they do. However, with buildings of that height and mass, such damage causes immense structural harmonic distortion, and you may have noticed that when the 2nd one collapsed, it imploded from the inside.

There is simply no way to account for it architecturally or on a systems basis other than not to build them nearly so high.
