I agree with much of your assessment. We may have dodged a really really big hit.....No, I am not by any means discounting or saying that the WTC/Pentagon terrorist caused killings and destruction were not a big hit. I am agreeing with Honcho here...and saying that...as bad as it was, it could have been a lot, lot worse.
It's ironic in some ways..for I've felt as if the terrorists had no idea that they would actually "take down" the WTC towers..and in that respect they were "successful" beyond their dreams..But then on the other hand...they were not successful in causing the maximum chaos that a hit on the WH and/or Congress would/could have caused.
And for that I give thanks......

Thanks for the flag. Great thread. (^:

Security is an illusion. I for one would rather live in the knowledge that we are under attack, than live as a prisoner in my own country with no rights.

Thanks for the heads up - This has to be the best essay I've read yet on the subject - President Bush should be using this as the format for his next speech....

I worry less about Joe Sixpack and more about the "intelligentsia". It's not Joe Sixpack who is on the TV yacking about the need for moderation and how the US may have had it coming. . . I worry more about the President heeding the advice of another nation as his father did after the Gulf War. The elder Bush was advised by the Saudis - who are a very unfriendly in my eyes - not to advance on Baghdad when we had Saddam's forces on the run. The consequences of not finishing the job, and Saddam, are directly related to the current situation.
The President is taking advice from the Pakistanis who advised him not to take Kabul (using the same logic as the Saudis - it will destabilize the country). Fortunately, the Northern Alliance didn't see it that way.
We must conduct this war with all the ruthlessness we can muster. Never forget that our people were massacred on 911.

So it's your contention that the members of the media are not primarily concerned with the cash? You believe that these are political animals? They're pretty automatons that read from teleprompters not political people looking to trade away the country that pays them and makes them famous.
You don't seem to understand what makes the media tick.

"Our enemies are willing - better said anxious -- to give their lives for their cause."
Other than a few fanatical leaders, I don't believe it. So where are the thousands of Taliban martyrs now? They're high-tailing their cowardly ass out of Kabul, and many others are defecting. Anyone heard of the brave Pakistani volunteers heading back to Pakistan with their tails between their legs? These great warriors are no better than the Iraqis. The Taliban leader, Oman, is currently begging his valiant men to re-group and not run...so much for dying for allah. These guys had no idea who or what they were screwing with.

Thanks for the ping.
There are things we civilians can do. We can participate in our own defense. We can start civil defense networks and educate people how to respond if there is an attack in our areas. We can also train people to participate in mobile units who can travel to stricken communities to help out. We can join the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Navy League, Air Force Auxiliary, Marine Corps League Auxiliary and support our men and women in the armed forces.
Finally, we can go into our communities and schools and help people to remember we are fighting to preserve the form of government that our founding fathers created for themselves and posterity-- a Constitutional Republic. We must not let the terrorists cause us to lose the most valuable things we possess, our RIGHTS and LIBERTIES!
