The FBI (news - web sites) has obtained e-mails exhanged between the hijackers and their associates.
There is new evidence suggesting the terrorists who carried out last week's attacks in New York and Washington used the World Wide Web to help coordinate their deadly efforts.
"They used the Internet and they used it well," an FBI official said of the 19 men who hijacked four passenger airliners last Tuesday, steering three of them into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon (news - web sites).
The official, who is heading up the cyber-portion of the investigation, told reporters the bureau had obtained hundreds of unencrypted e-mail messages exchanged by the hijackers and their associates, dating as far back as 30 to 45 days prior to the Sept. 11 attacks.
The online communications contain relevant evidence as well as seemingly casual chitchat and are written in both English and Arabic, according to the official.
The official said the terrorists used computers in public libraries as well as personal computers to gain access to the Internet, adding that Internet service providers, along with banks and airlines, were cooperating fully with the investigation and had quickly turned over information and records requested by the FBI.
The official also said the FBI had seized a number of computers from individuals suspected of involvement in the attacks and was still examining them.
Beverley Lumpkin contributed to this report from the Justice Department.

From the following post: UNHOLY WAR AND SYMBOLIC TERRORISM (PA Black September responsible?)
The sentences in bold below may give us the clue as to the significance of September 11. Note that there is also a 22 in the date.
But the worse their publicity, the better Black September likes it, and in September 1972, they got the attention of the whole world when they murdered eleven Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics. Now in order to comprehend what sort of unmitigated barbarism we faced in the Attack on America, and we shall face in the future, the "symbolic terrorism" first has to be comprehended. On September 11, 1922, a British Mandate was declared in Palestine, over the objections of most Arabs. Part of this territory became the State of Israel. Fifty years later to the month, Black September killed the eleven Israeli athletes. On September 11, 2001, the Attack on America occurred. One needs to visualize the international members of Black September lapping up the blood of our thousands of victims to realize the relish they take in such terrorism, and also the enormity of the evil which we confront

Black September?
We are dealing with many, nations, that each have their own group. Each group has many cells, consisting of multiple terrorists.
Now, take all the 'groups' from each nation and you have the main group. Nation of Islam. Hang on to your hat.
They need to have reasons to crack down on it once they get back to harrassing citizens.
Now before I get mobbed by a bunch of patriots, let me say that what the FBI is doing right now is ok by me. If they had been chasing down illegals and investigating large, multi-state organizations that commit crimes against citizens instead of poking their noses into every local crime that was properly the purview of state and local authorities I wouldn't be so worried.
But hey, maybe I'm just pessimistic. Maybe once all of the terrorists in the US are captured the FBI will continue to work on multi-state, organized crime and leave the policing to the the police that are hired and fired by our communities.
And I could win the lottery.
