MOST Americans seem to understand the gravity of the situation that terrorism has put us in - and the need for some serious military response, even if that means dangers to the lives of us all. But some still insist on posturing while on the edge of a volcano.

"All we are saying, is give peace a chance ... "

What ignorant rot! What is needed is a tightly-focused war, and when our enemies are vanquished, a modest present-day Marshall Plan to help those countries build stable and peace-loving democracies.

Good post! You are so right, and that we will. The plans are ready and waiting for the right moment.

The Taliban are digging their grave deeper by the day and it won't be difficult to justify the use of force. The end result will be the liberation of the Afghany people that have been supressed by the ruthless Taliban. (put that in your pipe and smoke it you brain-dead pacifist pond-scum)

Neville Chamberlain was still despised by the extreme leftist-pacifists of his day by threatening to declare war if Hitler invaded Poland, then following through on the threat. According to their way of thinking, Poland was merely being restored to its pre-World War I status (split between Russia and Germany) and England had no right to interfer.

I have often wondered how the pacifists of the 1930's would have acted if their views had been adopted. Would they have formed straight lines on the way to the gas chambers?

It is very disheartening to see college students (whose parents are shelling out tons of money) holding "teach ins" and "peace rallys." It reminds me of that Tom Petty song "Into the Great Wide Open" whose refrain is "A Rebel withour a Clue."

Such empty minds--full of idealism and void of rational thought. Minds that cannot even weigh moral choices and concepts. They can only shout, hope to feel superior, and hide their cowardice behind alleged intellect.

First came the resurrection of bellbottoms and platform shoes. Could the PeaceNiks have been far behind?

We should understand the "alienation" and "sense of grievance" against us by various people in the Middle East.

I can hear Al Gore saying this in my head, followed by pleas to light candles, hold hands, and sing chorus after chorus of "Give Peace A Chance".

Thankfully the "grownups" are now in charge.

Great article.

Pacifists don't seem to realize that peace can only come about when the rights of individuals are protected, and the inherent dignity of humanity is respected. The terrorists show no regard for other human beings. This threat must be stomped out in order for peace to exist. Peace is a by-product of protection, not simply an alternative to war. My two cents.

But seriously folks, if we all join hands and wish really hard maybe these terrorists will go away and all of this will be just a bad dream.(sarcasm/)

The total lack of understanding from these buffoons is sickening. Round them all up and put them on planes to Afganistan and let them find out for themselves what their views will accomplish. After a few of them are slaughtered by the Taliban, maybe they will see the emptiness of their beliefs.

I imagine Sowell is referring to Andrew Young, Carter's buffoon at the UN. After leaving diplomacy Young supported the Nicaraguan Marxists through his contacts with the Bank of Credit and Commerce International -- A Pakistani-dominated bank. Carter himself often flew in a BCCI plane, despite warnings he received that the bank was corrupt and that he was being used.

You're right, these pacifists on college campuses are myopic. They don't understand what they're doing or the complexity of the situation at hand. They're doing it because it feels good.

Anyone who is a pacifist should be viciously attacked.
