TOKYO (Reuters) - The United States has warned its allies of a possible second round of attacks by the end of this week following the deadly recent strikes against New York and Washington, Jiji news agency quoted Japanese government sources as saying.
The next round of attacks, if really launched, would be on an even greater scale than those on September 11, which killed more than 6,000 people, according to information provided to Japan by the United States, Jiji said.
The news agency quoted the sources as saying on Saturday that the "means of terrorism" would be "more cruel and shocking" than in the September 11 carnage, when hijackers flew airliners into New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington.
The targets of the possible attacks were unknown but possibilities included members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Pakistan, Jiji said.
The government sources said attacks on Japan could not be ruled out since Tokyo has expressed support for U.S. retaliation against the September 11 strikes.
The United States has judged that a second round of attacks, if carried out, is likely by the end of this week at the latest, the sources said.
Japan's public security authorities have gone on heightened alert since receiving the information from the United States.
Washington suspects that a group led by fugitive Saudi-born millionaire Osama bin Laden has been contemplating attacks using biological and chemical weapons, such as sarin nerve gas, for years, according to the sources.
The United States has information that the group has already acquired small airplanes to spray bacteria causing smallpox or anthrax from the air, Jiji quoted the sources as saying.
Time magazine reported on Saturday that investigators had found a crop-dusting manual during a search for those responsible for the attacks on New York and Washington, triggering concern that crop-dusting planes might be used for chemical or biological assaults.
The FBI in Washington said it had not seen the report and had no comment on it.

I know what you are talking about. And it wouldn't be pretty. But I don't know that the people responsible would be affected.
Too bad action couldn't be made before this point. It's not going to do the people about to be killed much good.
Have you ever seen the border? Miles and miles of unfenced areas and where there are fences there are holes cut in them. They have increased checks on the bridges but there's no INS agents standing out there in the desert or everywhere along the Rio Grande. Apparently the two Arabs caught here last week were caught by Mexican officials when they noticed they were trying to use the illegal Mexicans' route into the US instead of through customs where agents can check them.
If that is what the drug companies think, then they are the stupidest, most inept businessmen and women on the planet. I would give 1/2 a year's salary to get my child vaccinated, just now...
That's the nice thing about having them caught in Mexico. There probably more chance they will have been made to talk. They have methods over there that can get a confession out of anyone, I really wouldn't like to be the Arab male who is picked up by the Mexican police when they apply the high voltage cattle prods.
I don't know why the number is so low. I am not a medical guy. It could be that it takes time to gear up vaccine production and the manufacturing capability is maxed out at 40 million doses. It could be budget limited. It could be a lot of things. I'm just reporting what I have read.
There is no possible way that we can figure out every eventuality in this situation. We can pray for God to give our leaders wisdom, and for Him to protect us and to expose the plans of our enemies before they can implement them, and it seems He's doing that. Just the fact that they are admitting that the crop-dusting thing is a real possibility is evidence to me that He is helping the authorities uncover their plots, or at least opening their eyes to see what used to be unthinkable. I think the President needs to call ANOTHER day of prayer, and maybe suggest that IF we know of any wrongdoing in our own lives, we turn from that also. I think God will bless that, too.
Taking that route would mean they believe we won't follow our own stated policy in regard to WMD.
