POST BOOMERS/PRE X - finally, a thread just for us - Thread 5

Posted on 10/02/2001 7:36:41 PM PDT by WIMom

Last night, there was an anti baby boom thread that started with a rant, and before some disruptor trashed it, some of us who were born at the tail end of the baby boom - from 1956 to 1964 - were having some nice recollections. The things that we seem to have in common are the following:

1. We were too young to serve in Vietnam, but remember the news.

2. As far as we're concerned, the music, television and popular entertainment and heroes of the 60s were and still are a matter for personal taste, and don't represent the shining apex of all civilization, icons to be revered by generations to come - in short, the Beatles were just a band that some might not like, and old Trek was cheesy and not well written.

3. Old boomers came into adulthood at the ideal economic circumstance - we've had to work for ours.

4. Our clothes and music tended to be lighthearted, and we are more conservative/libertarian as a whole than the older boomers.

So post your memories of tunes, movies, shows, fashions, school stuff, etc.

And enjoy yourselves!

Thanks to one_particular_harbour for the fantastic idea!

Well - those were popular songs, so I imagine that they were the themes of a lot of dances around the nation.

But to answer your question, I grew up in a small town, just northeast of Cincinnati - Mason, OH. I graduated in '75.

My kids think I'm kidding when I tell them girls could not where pants to school until I was in first grade. Born in 1962. I remember my mom asking again and again if it was ok when I wanted to wear pants (no blue jeans allowed) to school, it was such a big deal. And those elephant pants!! in the sixth grade, I thought I was Marcia Brady--Stylin'!

My high school's prom theme should have been... anything by "Cheech and Chong." You could get high just walking by the "smoking" area.

Yeah, Mason used to be a small town. :) No more! Now it's yuppie heaven. I should know - I'm a hop skip & jump away, at the edge of the suburban sprawl.

I remember when I was quite a little girl - born in '57 - but I'm probably thinking about very early '60's. My mom bought me one of those white furry "mufflers" to match my winter coat.

Did anyone else have one of those?

Also - do any of you remember - in the Barbie Doll family - Scooter (Barbie's cousin) AND Tutti?

Denny Tario & Dance Fever. Remember the Dance Fever learn at home kits you could order off the TV? They had footprints you could put on the floor and follow along to learn the dances.

I recall it wasn't called Phiso-Derm back then. It was Phiso-Hex, and was withdrawn because of whatever the "hex" referred to - hexachlorophene maybe? It was re-introduced as Phiso-Derm. I remember being bathed in Phiso-Hex when I had chicken pox and I hated the smell and ugly green bottle. Seemed very medicinal and creepy.

Remember mercurochrome? it was withdrawn too. I always felt gypped because my neighbor got mercurochrome on her skinned knees and I only got antibiotic ointment. Her knees were such a cool color of pinkish red. . . I was really jealous!

I grew up in So Cal (1952) and us girls prayed for rain (which seldom happened) cuz that meant a "Yellow Flag Day." If the school hung out a yellow flag -- it meant the girls could wear pants that day. Sheesh!!!

I grew up in Mason - when it was still a town of 5,000 people. My dh and I (along with our 2 sons at the time - now we have 3) - moved to to the Louisville/southern IN area 14 years ago, due to a job transfer. My family is still in Mason and my dh's family is in northern KY.

My grandfather (died 2 years ago at the age of 90) - was the police chief and fire chief of Mason for 26+ years. (BTW - many, many wonderful Freepers helped me get through that terrible time with their prayers. Anyway - I digress:

Yes - it was a nice, small town to live in--WAY back when!!!

Does anybody remember when the Brady Bunch visited Kings Island on their show? I was working there, then.
