Post Muslim Clerical Anti-terrorist Statements Here

Posted on 10/04/2001 3:38:38 PM PDT by ecomcon

We keep hearing about how the great majority of Islam is peaceful and condemns violence. Let's see if we can support that assertion. If you have any article, or something that has a source, that addresses this, especially from Muslim clerics or other "officials" please post them here, so we can see what the informed public position of the Islamic leaders are.

Today on the Dennis Prager show, his guest was Khaled Abou El Fadl an Acting Professor of Law at UCLA -- not a cleric, sorry. Dennis introduced him as one of the rare Moslems he knew who was objective and honest about his faith. I was very, very impressed with how outspoken he was and wondered if perhaps he might find himself in the crosshairs of the radical Islamists. I don't know if Dennis's shows are archived on his website, which I've had difficulty accessing for some reason, but I would highly recommend tracking down some of the columns he has recently had published in the newspaper -- L.A.Times, I believe.

Here is more info from his bio:

The Omar and Azmeralda Alfi Distinguished Fellow in Islamic Law Born Kuwait 1963, raised in Egypt and Kuwait B.A. Yale, 1986 J.D. University of Pennsylvania, 1989 Ph.D. Islamic Studies, Princeton, 1999 UCLA Law faculty since 1998

So what did he have to say?

I just posted the article he wrote called "What Became of Tolerance in Islam." You can find the same article at the L.A. Times online by doing a search for his name.

Bump for continued efforts to characterise an apparently empty set.

I heard this: "It was a terrible act but we deserved it because of our ties with Israel".

I suggest doing an in-depth history study on each grand-poobah before attaching much weight to ANYTHING they say. (Like the raghead Bush had with him at the memorial service.)

They know we're gonna win. History PROVES the arabs will surrender in droves when it's necessary for their very survival, only to stab us in the back later when it's "safe".

Think I'm wrong? Look at how many of them have been spared after being ROUTED by us or Israel. But they're STILL a problem! Saddam STILL doesn't know we kicked his ass!

Hey, I finally found one, well, sorta..

FATWA OKAYS MUSLIMS IN U.S. STRIKES In a separate development, an international Muslim religious ruling endorsed the morality of the U.S.-led military effort against terrorists and said American Muslims may participate in the military response to the Sept. 11 attacks. “We find it necessary to apprehend the true perpetrators of these crimes, as well as those who aid and abet them through incitement, financing or other support,” the five Muslim scholars declared. The ruling, released Thursday, was written by Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the widely respected chairman of the Sunna and Sira Council in Qatar, along with three colleagues in Egypt and one in Syria. The ruling was requested by Army Capt. Abdul-Rashid Muhammad, the first Muslim chaplain in the U.S. military. Muhammad asked whether it was proper for the 15,000 U.S. Muslims in uniform to participate in retaliation against those thought to have planned and financed the terror attacks and to eliminate their safe haven in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Gee, it only took a month for them to decide.

I still haven't seen a single fatwah against OBL or suicide terror. They are all afraid of this guy. Or they silently agree with him. Which is it? It's bad either way.

See Muslim Cleric OKs Hit on bin Laden.

Most significant Muslim cleric comment I have seen. I hope bin Laden sees it. Perhaps someone will post it as a story on FR.

Prominent Muslim cleric denounces bin Laden

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- A prominent Muslim cleric denounced suspected terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden Thursday and urged Afghanistan's Taliban rulers not to risk thousands of lives for him.

"Bin Laden is not a prophet that we should put thousands of lives at risk for," said Tahirul Qadri, who heads the Pakistani Awami Tehrik Party.

Qadri, who has thousands of followers in Pakistan and abroad, also criticized the Taliban for sheltering bin Laden and urged the Muslims to "see the difference between jihad and acts of terrorism."

He is the first prominent Muslim scholar to condemn bin Laden and the Taliban so strongly in public. His condemnation could help the Pakistani government defuse tensions in Pakistan where a small but vocal religious group has launched a nationwide campaign against its decision to back U.S.-led military strikes into Afghanistan.

"Bombing embassies or destroying non-military installations like the World Trade Center is no jihad," Qadri said, and "those who launched the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks not only killed thousands of innocent people in the United States but also put the lives of millions of Muslims across the world at risk."

"Now the Americans are killing Afghans ... they may go for other targets too. Who knows how many innocent Muslims will be killed because of those terrorists who attacked the World Trade Center?"

While urging the United States to stop its airstrikes in Afghanistan, Qadri held the Taliban rulers responsible "for the death of hundreds of innocent Afghans."

The Taliban, he said, should have handed over bin Laden and other suspected terrorists to the United Nations or any other neutral international organization before the airstrikes began. "They can still do it and save their country from further destruction," he said.

Qadri, whose Pakistan Awami Tehrik emerged as a popular religious party in local elections earlier this year, also acknowledged that the United States had provided credible evidence about bin Laden's involvement in acts of terrorism.

"In the light of this evidence, the Taliban had no justification for continuing to protect bin Laden. Why protect him? Is he a saint or a prophet? He is a man who himself has admitted arranging car-bomb attacks on U.S. embassies. He is no saint." Not clear if he has issued a fatwah against OBL.
