Despite Florida, widespread anthrax attack unlikely
Christian Science Monitor ^ | 10/10/01 | Liz Marlantes

The ongoing FBI investigation into two cases of anthrax in Florida is illustrating both the possibility and the limitations of a major biological attack occurring in the United States.

Both cases involve employees for the supermarket tabloid The Sun. The first man died last Friday, while the second has been treated for the disease and is in stable condition.

While authorities have not officially labeled the incident as terrorism, the fact that two men from the same office building contracted anthrax seems to indicate some form of foul play, say experts. Health officials say the disease is not contagious, and so could not have been passed from one man to the other. This may mean that a criminal or terrorist group has the ability to grow or manufacture anthrax spores, and might attempt to carry out other attacks in the future.

But the chances of any group successfully pulling off a wide-scale anthrax attack are still fairly remote, medical experts say. While certain terrorist groups may now be able to grow the anthrax organism, they would face many technical obstacles in preparing and deploying the spores to infect large numbers of people.

In addition, the relatively quick reaction of Florida health officials in identifying and isolating the outbreak indicates another strong layer of defense that could mitigate the impact of any future attack.

"What is the likelihood of a major chemical or biological attack in the United States? Very slim," says Christopher Hellman, a senior analyst at the Center for Defense Information in Washington. Even given what's just happened, he says, "you're way more likely to be hit by lightning."

Experts say one of the main reasons anthrax is often seen as conducive to a terrorist attack - aside from its deadliness - is that the spores are relatively hardy.

"You can keep them in your pocket for 20 years, and they're still viable," says Theresa Koehler, an associate professor at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.

But to spread the spores effectively, terrorists must first find a way to get large numbers of people to inhale them - something that makes them dependant on things like weather conditions, if they're planning their attack outside. Once the spores settle on the ground, they're far less dangerous, since it's unlikely they'd be inhaled.

Terrorists would also have to have the technical expertise to manufacture the proper particle size - since anthrax has a tendency to clump, which makes it less effective.

"Anthrax spores can survive for days, but it's not so easy to disperse them in the air in the proper-size particles," says Jacqueline Cattani, director of the Center for Biological Defense at the University of South Florida.

The closest thing to a historical precedent officials have for judging the potential impact of an anthrax attack is a 1979 explosion at a military research facility in the Russian city of Sverdlovsk. The explosion released anthrax spores into the atmosphere - but only a relatively small percentage of residents came down with the disease, Dr. Koehler says.

And while terrorist groups have attempted to use anthrax in the past, most have been unsuccessful. "The Japanese cult Aum Shinri Kyo tried to disperse anthrax about nine times in Japan before the sarin gas attacks - and were totally unsuccessful," says Ms. Cattani. "In this particular case, it's unfortunate one person did die, but I think the public health department dealt with it very rapidly."

The terrorists may not be trying to kill mass amounts of people, but rather economic disruption. One of the bigwigs(CEO) of American Media says their bldg may never be occupied again, and that some health officials speculate that they will never be able to give assurances that the bldg is fully disinfected. So pop off more attacks in 100+ large bldgs, maybe a few dozen die, but now your writing off 100+ bldgs, big economic hit. Not going to destroy the economy, but its one more infection that could conceivably combine with others and eventually overwhelm the "immune system".

I tend to believe this. My guess is we have been attacked by bio warfare already, but the results have been so ineffective that no one has noticed. I just pray it stays that way.

The media is in a feeding frenzy over this now. I think they are much more dangerous, in many ways, than enemies from the outside. They will have everyone running to the hospital with simple flu systems. The good news....I guess drug stocks will soar now!

Scary but perceptive thoughts.... especially since we seem to be so self-destructive and media driven.

Agreed. In Sarasota and Naples we have people freaking out over receiving "substances" in the mail today. The economic disruption from random attacks versus planned is much worse.

True. For those of us who live in Florida, anthrax is nothing compared to the perils of traffic during tourist season... nothing compared to lightning strikes, etc. It's rare and this appears to be intentional, but it needs a bit of perspective. But the press coverage is getting ridiculous, with reporters covering every sniffle or discovery of soap powder in an envelope even before the victim even sees the doctor. It's like listening to hypochondriacs rattle for days and days about psoriasis and stomach ulcers.

Didn't bother to read this post after I saw it came from Christian Monitor(cult). Never read anything they print.

I've found that they offer great news on occasion. The words 'Christian' and 'Christian Science' seem only to be adjectives.

Same "area denial effect" is possible in subway systems and conested downtown areas.

The most likely anthrax delivery system is the glass jar full of spores, thrown against ventilation intakes, or onto subway tracks.

A sporting event like a hockey or basketball game could also invite attack.

Duh, so they would launch their attack inside, or on a windless day. Indeed, the FBI has already indicated that there have been a number of suspicious requests for architectural blueprints both before and after 9/11. This article is just more Pollyana-ism, I'm afraid. The threat is very real.

Someone on the news tonight commented that the same people panicking about anthrax might also smoke, eat junk food and drive without wearing a seat belt, all of which are MUCH more likely to do them in...

Chances are they're hoping for the "best", massive deaths, but content to settle for Plan B, "death by a thousand cuts".

We will need serious internal security measures and un-PC profiling and immigration measures to ensure our survival. Better sooner than later.

Or some guy dressed like security who walks into a subway and lets loose... nobody noticing that he's armed since he's in 'uniform.'

It's not "Polyanna" to not just assume that EVERYTHING is a threat. At the PBC building where they were testing people today, someone noticed a white powder on the floor. Everybody went nuts, evacuated the place, called in HazMat, doo dah, doo dah and it turned out to be from a nearby construction site. At a post office, somebody pushed the panic button when a letter looked like it had dirt on it. Same drill and when the experts arrived, they came to the conclusion that the "dirt" was dirt.

The note above in this thread about how fear can cause us to flee where there is no enemy are words which we need to carefully consider. This all reminds me somewhat of the hysteria which existed when AIDS first was reported. Everytime somebody got a nosebleed, the fearful went over the edge.

Yes, reasonable precautions are called for, but we need to stop viewing the world through the prism of a catostrophic worldview. There really isn't a terrorist behind every bush nor is there anthrax in your baby powder...

So far, no one has harnessed "the panic effect".

For example, in a stadium it would only take setting off a yellow military high capaity smoke in the upper deck while screaming "Mustard Gas!!!"

A terrorist could also dump a jug of bleach, or throw a sack of flour around yelling "ANTHRAX!!".

Without directly harming one person, you could set off a stampede for the exits which would result in thousans being literally shoved off the bottom of the upper decks by the crush of the bodies above them pressing down, and of course more would die crushed in tight passageways.

Presumably in the studios of CNN....CBS....NBC....ABC.

I'm worried that the next attacks will occur in the school yards, knowing that we value our children above all else, including our own lives.
