having read this twice, i see things differently. i do like, however, your comparison between nazis and terrorists (you said islam, i guess i changed it). both do want to subject the world to a doctrine of likeness and hatred of non-likeness, whose ends justify whatever means is necessary
we all wear many hats, and as you said, our value of diversity allows us to respect the many hats that our neighbors might wear. my christian hat tells me that those who believe in islam are spiritually mistaken, but my american hat tells me that moslems have the right to worship their god as they see fit and that i should leave them alone to so do. my thinking hat tells me that islam is a peaceful religion.
unfortunately, central asia and the middle east is, in many respects, several hundred years behind us in terms of understanding politics, government and religion. western history is full of christian religious zealots and the jewish people have not always been loathe to go to war. i submit to you that neither religion is a religion of war, and the same is true of islam.
do not confuse a few mad men's interpretation of religion to be the actual religion.

In historical terms, Muslims are far less violent than Christians/Westerners. They have killed a lot fewer people, especially in recent centuries, at least if you include Fascism, Nazism and Communism as essentially Christian heresies, which I do.
This fact, of course, has a lot more to do with the capabilities of the groups involved than it does with their inclinations.
To be perfectly fair, very few people in the last two or three centuries have been killed by Christians for specifically religious reasons, again with the totalitarian heresies noted above as exceptions.
