Smallpox vaccine is NOT made from actual smallpox, but from vaccinia. This is a strain of pox virus that mutated from the original smallpox strain in the early 1900's. Vaccinia does not cause any serious complication in humans, but at the same time confers immunity to small pox because of the smilarity of the antibodies between the two. So, while THE REAL smalpox virus may be found only in the US and the USSR, vaccinia is still available for the production of the smallpox vaccine.

No. The smallpox vaccine is NOT a weakened form of smallpox virus which is the variola virus, it is an unattenuated related virus called vaccinia. You cannot attenuate pox viruses, they don't work when you do that, you can attenuate other viruses like polio.

Dear "think free or die", Are you from New Hampshire? (Just wondering) Regarding spread of small pox through inanimate objects, I can not speak to the issue with credibility. Frankly, I don't think anyone on EARTH can either. Not to make you more concerned, but the last case of smallpox occured in (I think) 1977 in Somalia. Yeah, that's right... the same place where our Marines got ambushed by Osama's gang. This means that if the physician was 40 and diagnosed smallpox in Somalia in 1977, he would now be 65! You are correct. All US children are completely and totally vulnerable to this virus. On the other hand, the US government has a responsibility to declassify and release info on any small pox weapons programs. I am becoming frustrated with the lack of clinical data on the presentation of each case of Anthrax. I should not be learning of the cases through MSNBC! I should be hearing from physicians who observed each case. Unfortunately, it looks like physicians are running for shelter (trying to cover their tails for potentially missed diagnoses) instead of spreading word on what happened in each case.

CDC sometimes has the reputation of being egalitarian. I requested CDC to run blood tests for Hantavirus on a 5 year old in our ICU. He had many signs of a renal hantavirus infection. However, CDC unilaterally chose to ignore me, despite my personally delivering the blood samples to our county health infection control offices. Instead, they ignored me. One year later a story appeared in the local TV news. In another adjacent area, rats were identified with the Hantavirus. I was cussing because we could have published the story about the 5 year old, but because the testing facilities are locked up at CDC...there was no way to independently identify the germ. Doesn't that just take the cake? CDC looks to be operating a bit differently this time.

The small pox vaccine is only effective for 15 - 20 years after administration. So chances are, even if you were one of the last to recieve this immunization, you are very likely susceptible to the disease now. Lily,

that's only true if you receive ONE vaccination. There are many Americans who (for various reasons) received multiple doses. The evidence suggests that lifelong immunity occurs for some exposed to multiple doses. However, no research study ever identified the exact level of immunoglobulins required to create immunity to certain exposure levels of the virus. So, we can't correlate the antibody levels in your blood to protection.

My recollection is that the smallpox vaccine was NOT based on a mutation of the small pox virus. It was instead based upon a related virus (cox pox) (but was not simply mutated in the early 1900's. The cow pox virus existed for a long-time prior.

Well, I think the way most physicians and scientists would think of this is different. The issue is NOT the similarity of the antibodies. The issue IS the similarity in the protein coating of both the vaccine virus and the small pox wild-type virus.

So, while THE REAL smalpox virus may be found only in the US and the USSR, vaccinia is still available for the production of the smallpox vaccine.

Correct! However, with molecular technologies you could theoretically alter the proteinaceous coating of the virus in order to defeat the vaccine's utility. I think that is probably out of the capability of the Taliban.

I've been thinking similarly about things. However, smallpox is a different matter entirely. If the US gov't has information that small pox is a true weapon (and not just conjecture in the halls of academics); the Federal Gov't has a responsibility to INFORM the physicians in the country. MMWR (CDC's official publication) has not made any comments on imminent threat of small pox. In addition, our low vaccine inventories further heighten the alarm. One wonders what the Clinton Admin was doing over the past 8 years when this threat was arising.

I can't speak for Don Joe, he is doing a fine job on his own. However I think it is fairly obvious that both of us, along with some others on this thread suspect that you are not what you are presenting yourself to be. I was vaccinated for smallpox in '72 (I was 2 years old), but I don't have the traditional scar. Does that mean my system fought the disease before a pox developed? I do have a mark on my left arm that looks like broken blood vessels, it has been there since childhood.
