LONDON IN A startling revelation, the BBC on Sunday said the UN donated over $1 million to a charity believed by the US to be a front organisation for terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden.
The UN donated more than $1.4 million in 1997 to the Sudan-based Muwafaq Foundation, a consortium of charities, floated by wealthy Arab businessman Yasin al-Qadi whose assets were frozen by the US after the September 11 terror strikes, the BBC said in an investigative report in its on-line edition.
The US treasury believes that that the charity was set up by al-Qadi and was used by wealthy Saudi businessmen to transfer billions of dollars to bin Laden.
Al-Qadi has denied any connection with terrorism and has instructed his lawyers in the US and Britain to work to clear his name, the report said.
The investigation showed that the UN funded the Muwafaq (Blessed Relief) Foundation to "promote educational and social development programmes in Sudan."
His lawyers in London said, "Our client is horrified and shocked that his name has been included in this (treasury) list." (PTI)
It's a very intersting post- 1. Very frightening as well. Wouldn't be the first time the FBI missed the boat.
This sshould be stopped right now!
Hey geniuses, guess what??? Soon, you will find out what Al Queda is up against: CIA and FBI operatives who weave themselves into the fabric of Al Queda.
pretty scary
The next year, in 1985, Mohamed managed to get a visa to enter the United States. One year later, he enlisted as a regular soldier in the U.S. Army at the age of 34, unusually old for a recruit. He was assigned to the U.S. Special Operations Command in Fort Bragg, the home of the Green Berets and the Delta Force, the elite counterterrorism squad.Fluent in Arabic, Hebrew, French and English, Mohamed brought extensive knowledge of the Arab world. Though officially a supply sergeant, he spent much of his time teaching soldiers about the Mideast.
Robert Anderson, a retired lieutenant colonel, remembers him vividly. Anderson said Mohamed made no secret of his religious views.
"He had identified himself as a fundamentalist, but after I interviewed him I identified him as a fanatic," said Anderson, who lives in Fay-etteville. "So after the interview I said, 'Well, there's one thing I would like to say: Anwar Sadat was a hero to Egypt and to the United States.' He looked at me with these steely eyes and said, 'Sadat was a traitor, and he had to die.' "
Mohamed's beliefs were not just talk.
I guess for the sake of one or two stray readers who might happen by, here's the short version ---- The CIA is NOT our Friend !
shaking my head.
Returning home, he served in the Egyptian army for three more years. In 1984, he left to work as a security expert for Egypt Air -- and started to make contact with the CIA.
"This individual approached the CIA to offer information," a U.S. official told The News & Observer, speaking on condition that no further identification be provided. "Some time later, we found out he was talking to known terrorists and had identified himself as a CIA agent. We felt him to be untrustworthy, and we put him on the State Department watch list."
kind of appropriate a spooky story like this comes out around halloween. this guy's resume makes ya think back to ms. greenspan's comments from NBC & IMUS yesterday. a "security expert" for egypt air too boot.
Should be, "Dirty Mawafaquers!"
Yeah, Ali Mohammed was an FBI and CIA operative who did that.
Hard to tell who is in whose britches.
