Our Bible says the Anti-Christ will rule for 7 years, and Christ will come to destroy him.

Double Eclipses during Ramadan

Sometimes a Ramadan will contain a solar and a lunar eclipse. That inevitably provokes comment, because of traditions that such a "double-eclipse" is a portent for some unusual event. Ithna'asheri Shi'ites, for example, believe that their Twelfth Imam will reappear after a Ramadan double-eclipse (although those two phenomena will supposedly take place in reverse order, with the solar one occurring in mid-month (5); that will require the moon to suddenly double its speed of movement after the onset of the Holy Month!)

In March/April 1894 (Ramadan 1311), Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (founder of the Ahmadiyya or Qadiani movement in Pakistan) interpreted a double-eclipse as a sign that he was a genuine modern-day prophet (6). The lunar eclipse during that particular month was only partial, although the solar one two weeks later was total in a few places in eastern Asia (7). However, there was nothing at all extraordinary about those two eclipses: every 22 or 23 Islamic years there is at least one Ramadan featuring a pair of eclipses two weeks apart (8) - one of which is usually partial; see Table 1.

Very much rarer is a Ramadan containing two total eclipses.

Table 2 lists all such occasions since AH 1, as well as during the next 200 years (9); (its solar eclipses are all central, with annular ones also included).

It will be interesting to see whether the two total eclipses scheduled to occur during Ramadan 1424 (AD November 2003) - are cited to support a claim similar to that made by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, or as proof of thesignificance of some extraordinary event.

Granted, this will be in the reverse order of the "prophecy," but we're dealing with a megalomaniac in bin Laden, ands tens of millions of death-cultists throughout Islam.

This is silly. Anyone who reads Dune knows that the Mahdi is Muad'dib.

I always wondered how authors came up with so many original names for characters and places in their books... then one day I realized they STOLE THEM ALL almost exclusively from history...

A quick perview of the last 500 years of Bible scholarship will reveal that because of the vast quantity of original Bible texts, we actually have a very good idea of what the ‘original’ Bible says. Its almost exactly what any honest Bible translation says.

And this is the proof: If the Bible we have received wasn't so faithful to the original texts, ‘other interests’ would make that knowledge an essential part of every child public schooling. But, as you will learn as you begin to deal with the history of textual criticism for yourself, the Bible is, in fact, because of its essential prominence to all of western culture, the most thoroughly attested ancient document in existence.

Now the Koran on the other hand.... I also recommend that you look into the serious scholarship on that.

Don't be lazy! The internet and interlibrary loan programs are a great resource. You can also get a library card from your local community college and your state college. You can also use, if not even purchase a membership at, virtually any campus library in the country.

Also, just to give you an example:

Take a look at the textus receptus, the Greek text we've inherited from the monastic manuscript tradition, that is, the one passed down through the age. Compare that with the so called Alexandrian text, which is the Greek text put together by modern archaeological findings. The number of significant divergences is well under a single percent of its overall content. That alone, after 1700 years of turbulent world history, says something about the care afforded this text.
