Lodi High School student stabbed in fight
By News-Sentinel staff
A Lodi High School teen-ager was stabbed this afternoon near the campus as a result of an apparent fight with another student.
Senior Anthony Melhaff, a linebacker for the schools football team, was taken by ambulance to Lodi Memorial Hospital.
Melhaffs injuries were not life threatening, police said.
He was listed in serious condition at about 4 p.m. today and was about to undergo surgery, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Melhaff was reportedly stabbed five or six times, witnesses said.
The suspect, whose name was not available, was taken into custody by police, Lt. David Main said.
Melhaffs father, who reportedly kicked the suspect in the face, was also arrested. His name was unavailable.
An unnamed security guard who witnessed the fight and attempted to restrain the suspect suffered a broken nose, witnesses said. It is unknown if he was taken to the hospital.
The fight happened about a block from Lodi High School in a vacant lot at Elm Street and North Pacific Avenue.
Police do not know if the students had scuffles in the past, Main said.
Fellow Freepers, this is a job for your blazing keyboards.
The mayor of Lodi is Alan Nakanishi (R), who I believe just narrowly lost to Senator Mike Machado (D) in the last election and seems to be a sensible guy. He might want to hear about this: nakanishi@lodi.gov or the police chief Jerry Adams: police@lodi.gov
This isn't huge news in the scheme of world events, but I imagine it is for this father and his family. The son that was stabbed is expected to be ok, just now has to get bail money for Pops.
I have no problem with the arrest as long as no charges are filed.
I initially thought this referred to Lodi OHIO until I noticed it in your comments.
1. The story is fine where it is. This is breaking news.
2. There is nothing wrong with the posting of local stories on FR. Every first hand account on FR is a local story until the media finally gets around to picking it up. Some "local" stories on FR have turned into very big national news.
3. We must wait to see if the father was in fact defending his son and faces charges for it. If so, this story takes on added significance for FR viewers.
4. You never use "neither" without "nor", just as it is incorrect to use "either" without "or". As an example, you might have said, "This story has neither relevance nor does it belong in breaking news.
5. My spelling is atrocious so your grammatical errors are forgiven.
Just having some fun. All the Best!
Or in the closing comments.
Give it up. Never happen. Even Freepers think the world revoves around them and their particular neighborhood.
These folks have to get out more. This is a national and international forum.
I have no problem with the arrest as long as no charges are filed.
The question, of course, is "arrested for what?" No one should be arrested on vagueries. No one should be apprehended or detained unless there are specific charges to be answered. But, we live in a different country now.
When I was a boy, it was generally understood that you weren't picked up unless you broke a law or there was probable cause to believe you had broken a law. Today, anyone can be picked up at any time and no reason has to be given. I remember my father telling me that that was how they operated in "Communist Russia," as many called it back then. They just picked people up. No charge. No cause. "You are coming with us. Do not question our authority."
It's not even "arrest" anymore. There's a subcategory; detained. It amounts to the same thing. You're cuffed, stuffed and brought down to the station. You may even be put in a cell. But it's not officially an arrest until they say it is. You've only been detained. That way, you can't sue for false arrest. You were never "officially" arrested.
Now, with all of the new "Homeland Security" measures and the race to expand law enforecment power, the lines of liberty and justice will be blurred even more.
Many local stories can later become national news. And as a national site it stands to reason ANYTHING in the nation would be of interest. (or internationally for that matter) So lighten up....whew....
This is a good post that may very well reflect a NATIONAL attitude that prevails in our society and institutions today. Years ago, any dad rushing in and defending his son against a stabbing would never have been arrested or taken into custody. This is a reflection of this new criminal rights attitude. Amazing how they got the father for kicking the criminal but managed to lose the attacker!
