think your safe unless they nuke 'narbor. (I'm fine unless they go for the GM proving grounds)

Ain't I a stinker?

You sure are. Besides, Bezerkly needed the second strike.

Yikes! This reaffirms my decision to take a nice, long drive on the day of the Super Bowl! My house is outside of the blast radius for the smaller nuke, but not the big one. In the case of a smaller yield device, at least I'd be west of the blast, opposite the prevailing winds and fallout.

The building where I work is about two blocks from the Superdome, so I wouldn't even have time to think "WTF was That?!" before being incinerated. Gotta remember to look into that telecommuting thing. :-D

Thanks for the site. I just sent the data to a couple of younger relatives who would be down wind of SF!

To those posting the 25 megaton boomer, just remember that more than likely about 99.999% of this happening would be with a dirty bomb that would be in a back pack or suitcase!

The actual flattening effect would be severely limited to a small area. The lethal effect would be the down wind fallout over the next week or so!

So the sad reality would be the, "1. Mt Surface Blast: Fallout Map".

"I just did the same thing for downtown Dallas (I'm at Bryan and Akard Streets) We're both dead. "

I live in Cedar Hill and tested to see what would happen if a bomb was dropped on Akard St. One meg re radiation and we are dead. But would escape pressure damage and fire burns. In other words, we are dead but not toast.

It seems that any "dirty nukes" would have a much smaller blast (on the order of kilotons, not megatons)
but the fallout will inflict many more casualties than the blast itself.

Such big blasts were what we were expecting if the former Soviet Onion ever launched a full strike...

Look's like you guys are having fun, but your blast calculations are way off. Most military ICBM warheads are in the 300-500 kiloton range and a "backpack" or "suitcase" nuke is in the 1/3 - 1 kiloton range. Much smaller, much less damage.

How large (MT) are those suit case bombs that are potentially floating around?

I just found this online at http://www.angelfire.com/il/randomnity/nukes.html

Recently roughly 20 suitcase nukes were reported missing by Russian officials, with there total value in the billions, the Russian black market is attempting to get there hands on them. Currently the nukes are with in the former Soviet Union. US Navy Seals were recently flown close to Russia, where by they parachuted into a land nearby and hiked into Russian soil where pictures of the Black Train were taken. This train is a Russian train whose sole purpose is to move ICBM’s and other weapons of mass destruction throughout Russia. The pictures were taken and given to officers within the Seals and passed onto the Pentagon. The suitcase itself is in cased in lead. It is untraceable by satellites or other means due to its thick lead shield. They are inconspicuous, and easily moved about. They are roughly 1 megaton as are the back pack nukes the US currently trains with. Who is after these missing nukes, inside sources say Iraq, Libya, North Korea, and many terrorist groups such as the Tamil Tigers, the Shining path, ANO, or Abu Nidal Organization, and Hezballah. These are the top contenders looking to purchase these nukes, currently US officials are working with Russian officials to account for the missing nukes. The organizations include the C.I.A, and K,G,B. The truth however is Top Secret, some of the nukes have made it out of Russia, however they are in storage as it is to risky for the removal of these weapons at this time. The Russian Mafia and a small group of Russian military personnel are looking to profit from the Nukes. Could they be coming to the US? The answer for now is no. The US is responsible for the funding for many terrorist groups from private donors, also the repercussions would be a nuclear strike. However the Nukes will be used as a threat deterrent, and a final mode of attack if a third world country or terrorist group becomes desperate beyond all means. A more pressing issue is the US policy on Nukes altogether. The Us is in a bad place right now regarding North Korea. North Korea does have Nuclear capabilities. However the Us stance is only to reprimand verbally, as other countries get Nukes we will reprimand them verbally as well. One day all third world countries will have nuclear weapons, and this will result at one time or another a global nuclear war. How the does the US stop other countries from obtaining nuclear weapons, the answer is we won’t, with the current non violent stance of the UN, and politics involved there will not be a military attack. Thus the C.I.A is working over time trying to find out whom is close to obtaining Nukes, and from those who are viewed as threats. A war with North Korea will happen it is only a matter of when, it is also likely China will side with North Korea, and the Us forces will be pushed to the brinks, it is likely that when this happens suitcase nukes will be placed near strategic locations throughout the US and will detonate causing the falling of communication systems, and strategic planning areas around the US. This then is the greatest threat and with are current stance on Nukes the Us is at great risk in the very near future of being a nuclear target.

Pretty cheezy and misleading, actually. I did a 1MT NYC blast and the problem is that it doesn't take geographic features into account. The bigger problem is that most likely blasts are even smaller and the suitcase nukes that everyone is worried about are smaller yet. Basically, it uses the worst case scenario (large nukes with no geographic features) to scare people.

Oh great, I Live and work w/in 12 miles of Downtown L.A. I just never thought about it happening seriously.AND I only checked the 1 Megaton Blast.I'm sure it would be Larger than 1 Megaton if one was dropped here. This is really an eye-opener for me.Fascinatingly (temporarily)scary, when you think about the fallout zone going out 50 miles to the 15 freeway.

The yeild of nuclear weapons has been going down as the accuracy of weapons have gone up.

The average USAF ICBM busting warhead is of a 200 kiloton yield. Trident 2 warheads are half that, depending on the model on the reentry vehicle.

The Hiroshima bomb was 20 kilotons. That compares to the 1000 kiloton, or 1 megaton, the mapping program uses.

An American 'back pack nuke' had a variable yield of a 0.1 kilotons to 5 kilotons. It was actually transported as three seperate man carried load and was assembled on-site. (We used shielding on the nuclear material.)
