How many jumped from the WTC towers?

Correction: The roof door on one tower was locked. But apparently the other door was breached and over 20 people were on that roof.

I distinctly remember watching via one of the news chopper cameras on the morning of 9/11, where more than one copter was attempting to either get near the roof or even maybe attempt to somehow communicate to some of the people hanging out windows. But there was just too much black, thick, acrid smoke. I could only see one tower from that angle, though.

There was a man in a wheel chair who was stuck in the stairwell. He could neither go up, down or get back in to the area he came from. There was an enormously fat woman who could not breath and was stuck on the 25th floor wheezing out of control. I'm sure neither ever made it out of the building.

I'm glad this guy got out okay, but geez, I wish he, or somebody, might have tried to do something to help these people, instead of just dismissing them later on as objects "in the way." Someday it may be one of his kids who's "enormously obese" or in a wheelchair.

I specifically asked this question to a research associate at work. It took her most of the day, but the next day she told me that OVER 175 people jumped. There is no "official" figures because the ruins make this very difficult. Apparently this figure was derived from a ground count prior to any building collapse, and film recordings. I am told that the margin of error is +/- 25 people which is a very large margin of error.

+/-25 would put the range between 150-200 people!

I don't doubt that actually. I've seen some pictures on the Internet in ONE frame alone where 5-8 people were airborne (G-d forbid) and several others looked to be perching at windows due to the fires.

IMHO, if the communist/anti-American "cells" disguised as "American" journalists and media talking heads insist on showing "civilian Afghanistan casualties" then they SHOULD BE required to show these haunting photos and video footage of our own citizens (as well as citizens from around the globe) having to jump to their deaths because some "virgin goat-obsessed wretches" decided to fly commercial jets into the WTC.

My friend spent some time volunteering at Ground Zero, handing out food, water, etc. to the firefighters. She got to know some of them, and the stories they told her were horrific. They said that when they arrived on the scene there was a constant "plop, plop, plop" sound from body parts hitting the sidewalk.

The jumpers haunt me, but I also feel for the firemen, police and rescue workers who were there on that terrible day. I can't imagine the horror of what those brave souls had to deal with at Ground Zero. The images they saw on 9/11 are probably burned into their minds forever. Add to that the heartache of losing so many of their brothers. And after all that, they're supposed to sit quietly and nod their heads politely while Richard Gere lectures them on compassion and tolerance? Absurd!

I hope they were already asleep as they fell...like in a dream of some sort.

I have read every response and link up to this point. IMHO the +150- number would seem to be accurate, but it isn't the body count (jumpers or otherwise) that will be effective in counterpointing the liberalwhiners
- hell most people are already accustomed to the 5,000+ total dead and are desensitized to the concept.
It is the images of those trapped above the blaze that will remind them.

We should all consider that this Veteran's Day, November 11, 2001, is a Sunday and is two months to the day of this carnage.
We should use the opportunity to get out in the public with posters of these pictures, preferably at local VFW or sporting events and not let the sheep return to their slumber.

Yes, the chaplain was the first rescuer casualty that day. He was performing last rites for a WTC victim when a jumper landed on him. If I remember correctly, his death certificate is number 1 for this horrible event.

This was the first story released, but then it was verified that the chaplin was killed by falling building debris as he kneeled over another Firefighter giving this firefighter his last rites due to being hit by a person who jumped or fell from the building.

What is the purpose of knowing how many jumped as opposed to how many were crushed to death or burned to death? And why would these numbers be "supressed"? I think the liberal media are an abomination, but I can't see charging them for "supressing" info that doesn't exist. What a non-issue! Dead is dead, sadly.

I wish they were asleep, but in the video clips you can clearly see them kicking and flailing all the way down. And a 1000 foot fall takes several seconds. Horrible!

I have done extensive reading on the idea of having helicopters rescue anyone from the roofs of the WTC on 9/11. My conclusion, based on those readings and my experience in the fire service, is that it was not a good idea. The primary reason is that it was too risky to attempt because of smoke conditions. Kinda hard to fly when you can not see. Especially near the roofs of those buildings, with all of the antennas, noxious smoke and such.

I remember hearing this once, and ony once, since that fateful day. The beloved police/fire chaplain that was killed in the towers was hit by a jumper. Has anyone else heard that?

My husband knows someone who saw a jumper kill a fireman when they landed. This may have happened more than once though...
