Rep. Boland, D-Mass., Dies

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Edward P. Boland, who rose from a working class neighborhood to represent Massachusetts in Congress for more than three decades, has died. He was 90.

Boland had been hospitalized since Oct. 11 with a broken hip. He died Sunday night at Mercy Medical Center of cardiovascular complications, a hospital spokesman said.

Known for authoring the amendments that barred U.S. aid to the Contras in Nicaragua in the 1980s, Boland chaired the House Intelligence Committee from 1977 to 1985.

"He took the New Deal values of Roosevelt, fighting against poverty and ignorance and injustice and used those values in the Boland Amendment to help the Nicaraguan people," said Rep. Edward J. Markey, D-Mass.

Boland was born in Springfield in 1911 to Irish immigrants. He enlisted as a private in the Army in 1941 and was discharged as a captain five years later.

Boland, who retired in 1988, never lost an election after winning a seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1935 at age 22.

He went to Washington with the man who would become speaker of the House, Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill, in 1952.

The two roomed together more than 20 years in an arrangement they described as a real-life "Odd Couple," with Boland the tidy one of the two.

In 1963, Boland joined President Kennedy on a trip to Ireland a few months before Kennedy's assassination.

"I don't think you could find a stronger supporter of President Kennedy and the entire Kennedy family than Eddie Boland," Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., said Sunday night.

In 1965, Boland marched with Martin Luther King Jr. in the landmark civil rights protest in Selma, Ala.

Another pro-abortion "Catholic" who will be buried with craven, corrupt priests slobbering all over the rich and powerful who will trudge to his funeral.

Yes, he helped the Nicaraguan people alright. I am pretty sure he was a supporter of Daniel Ortega. I was not.

"He took the New Deal values of Roosevelt..."

...and helped turn this country into pacifier-sucking collection of liberal blood-suckers. No disrespect intended, but how soon after the body cools can we fight for a conservative replacement?

I just realized that Boland died on the same day that Nicaragua declares Bolanos, an anti-Sandinista candidate, the winner of the elections - and Bolanos beat Ortega!

Maybe he died of a broken heart.

This is not accurate - the scumbag & other DemoncRATS left the door open for private contributions, which is what Reagan & North did. The so-called Boland amendments only applied to US Govt. direct funding. He (Boland) really was a scumbag, though.

Yes he was. If this was true, and I assume you know it to be, then why did the Demon Cats raise such crap over North and Reagan doing what they did?

The lefties in Congress were outsmarted by Reagan. The Boland Amendment was written to prevent intelligence agencies of the government from supporting the Contras. The NSC is not an intelligence agency.

The democrats were rooting for the communists and thought they had all the bases covered for helping them. They went squirrelly when they found out that they were not as brilliant as they thought.

Chris Dodd is next on my list; then Jim Wright [Dear Comandante].

Gosh. Bush's poll numbers are in the stratosphere, Ortega was soundly defeated, and the Red Sox haven't won the World Series since 1918.

Yep, he died a miserable old man.

Tony...I don't know what you are thinking, or what you purpose was in posting this, but I have to say the nasty comments it has led too are really unpleasant. For all that I strongly disagree with almost all of Boland's positions I see no reason to dance with glee on his grave. Seems cheap somehow.
