Is this gonna be one of those Kahoutek / Al Capone vault letdowns? Don't wanna be out standing around that time of night fer nuttin'. [Fogey am I -- when did that happen? ;o)]

BTW, any astronomy buffs know the name of a pretty impressive comet that appeared sometime late 60s to early 70s? I was out ridin' with buddies one late night and spotted what looked like a dim orange smudge that stretched across a good part of the sky. Slammed on brakes and we all got out to look. First comet I ever remember seeing, and it looked huge. Since we had no idea to expect it, it both neat and unsettling (in a cool sort of way -- I realized what it was right off). Really pressed home the point to me that comets appear stationary and don't move like I always thought when I was a kid.

I feel sorry for anyone trying to watch from the heart of Texas, unless the skies really clear between now and 5 AM. It's darker than pitch outside, and not a star to be seen.

Hey hey, I think I found it myself:

"Comet Bennett was a spectacular comet visible in the morning sky during the spring of 1970. There was little publicity for it because its appearance was fairly sudden."

More info here.

Saw it! We had to get out and start driving, but we were able to find the one spot in my state that had neither fog nor cloud cover! While the meteors weren't constant, they were very frequent. I'd say probably 30+ per minute at times. And a couple nice bright ones, too! Too bad I don't live in Australia or Asia... they were supposed to have seen 8,000-15,000/hr.

My first was Three Dog Night.

And the warmup band was Rod Stewart and Faces.
