You seem to have given up without a fight. The power in this country still belongs to the people and though many of the people are ignorant, if things get too far out of balance the people will wake up and correct the situation. Vote fraud almost made the difference in the last presidential election. There is little doubt that vote fraud made the difference in the election of Maria Cantwell to the Senate from Washington State. With a few minor changes we can limit although never completely eliminate vote fraud.

I know too many members of the US military to think that they would ever support a coup by any group. Every tyranny uses fear to control the majority. While democracies are perfectly capable of oppressing minorities they do not oppress the majority.

History is a series of cycles, just because our current cycle seems to be in the wrong direction does not indicate where the long-term trends are heading. I have faith in our country and in the future of mankind.

There was an interesting article posted earlier today The Great Patriotic War with the following quote.

After the war, Robert E. Lee faced both defeat and personal hardship, yet his faith burned as strong as ever, as we see in these words:

"My experience of men has neither disposed me to think worse of them; nor indisposed me to serve them; not in spite of failures, which I lament, of errors, which I now see and acknowledge, or of the present state of affairs, do I despair of the future. The march of Providence is so slow, and our desires so impatient, the work of progress is so immense, and our means of aiding it so feeble, the life of humanity is so long, and that of the individual so brief, that we often see only the ebb of the advancing wave, and are thus discouraged. It is history that teaches us to hope."

Every seventy to eighty years we go through a dramatic shift. 1776 the triumph of individual rights the free market and limited government designed to protect those individual rights. About 1860 the Civil war which was the culmination of the abolitionist movement that finally recognized that all men deserved freedom. 1930 the Depression caused a shift towards Socialism whose ideas had been gaining popularity throughout Europe and America. Now libertarian ideas have been gaining ground in the popular opinion for a decade or more. We are in another period of transition and it is possible we could go either way. Like the straw that broke the camels back, sometimes it takes another shift in the wrong direction to create the incentives for most people to get involved and correct the situation. Social Security will fail shortly. Other big Government solutions will demonstrate their ineffectiveness and we will have to start in the only direction that can really improve things.
