I accidentally permanently deleted a folder from Outlook Express - any chance of getting it back?

Posted on 11/25/2001 3:24:32 PM PST by my_pointy_head_is_sharp

I've been busy all day, transfering emails into folders, that way I won't be a target for the PE_MAGISTR.8 virus again (the one that takes random stuff from your computer & sends it to random people). It sends stuff to anyone in your email folders (Inbox, Sent, Drafts, etc.)

I accidentally deleted an entire folder in Outlook Express, one that still had lots of emails in it. It's deleted from the Deleted folder, too. (I don't know how I did it, but I did.) And there's nothing in my Recycle bin. Any chance I can retrieve it?

That's not good! :-( I run win2k, so that may be the reason why our Outlook Express programs work differently?

Anyway, can't help you anymore, you may wanna search in the Inbox.mbx or Sent Items.mbx if you haven't compressed folders recently, that's it!

Eudora is an email program, yet says it's not a mailbox. What's the difference?

Also, do I have to uninstall Outlook Express in order to use it?

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Mail

Go there and see what you find.

Hey, thank you backhoe for the link to Virtual Doctor. You always have good sites to suggest and I've many bookmarks on my computer committed to your suggestion. Happy Holidays to you.

Pointy head or not, Eudora is the way to go.

I just found a joke in my Sent Items.mbx file. It's one I haven't seen in a long time. Enjoy!

An Irishman, an Englishman, and a Scotsman are each enjoying a pint of Guinness on the patio. A fly lands in each glass. The Scotsman just drinks it down, fly and all, oblivious. The Englishman casually flicks the fly away, and keeps drinking. The Irishman grabs the fly and holds it over his glass, shouting, 'Spit it out, you bastard!!'

I've found DBXtract to be a simple(and free)way to save e-mail. If you have the same subject words repeated, it simply numbers them. I just checked the website and the programmer has a new version that dates/time stamps the same subject titles so they can be sorted. DBXtend has a fee of $30.

You can check it out and download from here

It even has a recover feature for mail that has been deleted from the deleted folder. I've not used that feature yet.

PINE is cool, although I prefer KMail (and, of course, the KDE desktop).

Think geek.

Well, I guess you could always ask the FBI if they could give you a copy. . .

Backup programs are our friends. I use Novastor's excellent NovaBack and a 4-mm SCSI DAT Tape. Saved my bacon on numerous occasions.

As for virus protection, get McAfee or Norton Anti Virus and keep them updated at least every 2 weeks.

a program is what you use to retrieve your email with. A mailbox is a storage bin that your email is sent to. Like your email address blahblahblah@mail. You do not have to remove outlook express at all. You can use as many different email programs as you wish. In fact I use Eudora, Outlook and netscape messenger. But, by far Eudora is the best.

one more bit of advice. I strongly suggest that you never use any Norton program for anything. McAfee is a much better antivirus program
