You post the best stuff, JH2! In a Thanksgiving day phone conversation with my favorite Drill Instructor at Parris Island, I learned that the latest group of Marine recruits are "great kids. Very motivated. More than half of my new recruits are from New York City. I asked every one of them, 'Why are you here?' and every one of them said they were here for Revenge! These are high quality kids. The harder we push 'em, the more determined they get." God, I love the Marines.

John,
I agree with a previous Freeper--you post outstanding stuff!
Airlift for this Army is costly. Even our wonderful C-17 (at about $350 million per copy) can only bring ONE tank at a time to the battle field. The C-17 is designed to land and take off at short, unimproved airfields--yes--BUT--there is no way our strategic lift can get the Army in great quantity where the fight is because they are TOO heavy! 94% of the lift for DESERT STORM was by Sealift--and that was even with the CRAF (Civil Reserve Air Fleet) --meaning the airliners--augmented for Phase II war.
SkyPilot's rules for war:
1. Get there the first-est with the most-est
2. Don't bring a knife to a gun fight
3. There is never enough airlift
By the way--our Marines are outstanding. I have never seen a Marine who was not sharp as a tack.
And anyone who wants a "Barf Alert" post--find Lt Gen Claudia Kennedy's (retired) book and post stuff here. I am sure it will generate about, ummmmmm, 549 responses.
Thanks again John!

My gunny dad always said a Marine Seargent has more respect and authority than a full bird Army Colonel.

Hackworth always has good points to make, and the Marines have always been the overall tough branch of the US forces.
Our Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines, and even the Coast Guard, all have important roles to play in our national defense, in spite of the overlap of equipment and duties, and the redundancy, and the duplication of effort and machinery, and the redundancy, and so much similar stuff, etc.
There's always room for improvement in the units, branches, and the DOD as a whole, but I wouldn't advocate getting rid of a whole branch. If we disband the Army, we'll soon find ourselves in a ground war against 10 million foot soldiers, simply because we created our own archilles heel. Enemies will design their forces to take advantage of any shortcoming they perceive in ours.
As a former sailor, I don't envy the infantry, grunts, airedales, or the others, or discount their contributions.
Besides, thanks to a merciful God, and the U.S. Marine Corp, the U.S. Navy has never, ever lost a gate. (:D

I can't beleive Hackworth wrote this.
It wasn't too long ago he was lambasting the Marines and Calling for them to be absorbed into the Army as redundant in one of his books.
Not That I don't agree with everything he wrote in this article, but I must point out his change of heart.
He was one of the harshest critics the Corps has ever had, even wanted them to be turned into one of the Army's light divisions.
I'm glad he changed his mind, Marines will have that effect on people.

The USMC are shock troops. The Army is for stand up slug it out battles against a like force. They don`t train the same nor should one be used in place of the other. The Army does special troops like the 10th Mountain Div. they use as shock troops. The 10th is in theatre now.
