The Beltway Boys

Posted on 12/01/2001 2:19:54 PM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

Fred Barnes just stated on The Beltway Boys that White House sources have informed him that Montana Governor Marc Racicot, a close friend of President Bush, will be appointed the next Republican National Committee Chairman.

The guy was awesome during the Florida election debacle.

I like it.

Do I recall that W wanted him as Attorney General, but something knocked him out of the running? Anyone have details? What else do we know about him?

Bad news for conservatives everywhere.

Bush's next trick will be to replace Cheney with pro-abort Ridge.

The old bait and switch.

As I recall, Racicot wasn't deemed "conservative enough" by some of the hard-liners.

I hope Barnes was speculating, otherwise, we'll have major battles ahead on the committee that writes the platform. Racicot is far more liberal than the GOP base.

A number of people on the thread are concerned by Racicot's less-than-conservative credentials. Can anyone provide details? Are there specific policy positions he has adopted that are troublesome?

Yes, that is true. As I recall, Racicot said that his family commitments were the main reason he didn't want to be AG. Not sure how this assignment fits in with that rationale, though.

Racicot isn't from the party's right wing. I'm not positive, but I think he's somewhat pro-abortion, but don't take my word for it. In any event, Ashcroft was clearly more conservative than Racicot, and a better choice, IMHO.

On the other hand, I want someone to head the RNC who appeals to moderates in this country. We need them to win elections. Racicot is tremendous on camera and that is a big part of what it takes to be successful in this job.

Barnes seemed to be speaking very definitively and authoratatively based on conversations with people inside the White House.

Sheesh another post as "breaking news" based on a "Washington Pundit".

Sheesh sometimes I think that Fred Barnes could break wind and there would be a post of that as "breaking news".

I know this is "my" pet peeve, but what the hell it is on a "breaking news" post.

People who serve AT the pleasure of the POTUS carry water for the POTUS; don't think Marc won't be saying EXACTLY what Bush wants him to say.

Now that you mention it, I do recall in declining consideration for AG Racicot hauling out the 'ol "want to spend more time with my family" (can we create an acronym for future use: WTSMTWMF?!)

What's amusing is that in explaining his decision to QUIT as RNC Chair, Jim Gilmore also relied on WTSMTWMF!!

As mentioned, Barnes (who certainly has very good contacts inside the White House), was not passing along the latest "buzz", but stating it as a flat-out fact. I consider that breaking news.
