Freeper Suggestions on Where to Retire
Me | 4 Dec 2001 | Me

Posted on 12/04/2001 8:28:05 AM PST by hattend

I am looking for suggestions from FReepers in lower 48 for city/state recommendations on where to retire.

I have pretty much decided on the western US (excluding the Pacific Coast states) and would lean to the southwestern states. I would stay in Alaska but I am tired of the long winter nights.

Would prefer acreage but you can try to convince me to live in town. :-)

If you know of any on-line newspaper links that have the classified, a URL would be appreciated.

Thanks
Don

If what you want is low-cost living among beautiful surroundings, warm people, and colorful culture, go to Mexico...better yet, Portugal! (Check into it!)

You may be joking, but Portugal would be good too! I lived in the Azores for almost 6 years of my 20 years in the military. People are friendly, food is great, life is inexpensive.

But stop it! You're making me think outside the box and it hurts my brain! :-)

Try Savannah, Georgia. Charming little city. Hilton Head, SC is also nice.

Funny, I have a friend who retired to South Georgia and he said, "Come on down and we'll go camping in the trees" I had to ask why. Didn't know they had 'gators in Georgia. LOL!!!

Well, I can give you 3 states NOT to retire in: Massachusetts Connecticut New Jersey Now you are down to 45 choices.

Add Hawaii to that list.

I know it's not in the "Lower 48", but just for those FReepers who may have been considering it:

It's a beautiful place, great climate and wonderful people but the population has doubled in the last 25 years since I came here(Pop. density now 183 per sq mi) and that doesn't include visitors. Add to that the highest taxes in the US to go along with the highest cost of living, arguably the most corrupt government at all levels and really onerous gun laws and you have "Paradise destroyed" IMO.

This is a great thread! But I have already made my decision. As a fourth generation native Vermonter, I'm going home at last. We bought 40 acres in the Northeast Kingdom where we will build our retirement place and enjoy some peace and quiet and get in some hunting, fishing and skiing. (Of course we'll keep our sailboat at Nawiliwili for Jan thru April

d;^)

Texas, Nevada, Florida, Wyoming, Washington and one or two other states do not have state income tax. For me, that's a primary concern.

I like the south Texas coast very much, and a conservative friend suggests the Corpus Christi area as pretty good politically, plus boating/fishing is A-1.

Washington state is liberal on the coast, but Spokane area is attractive politically and also has reasonable real estate, little ranches available, and is nextdoor to Idaho's skiing/boating opportunities. Also, both FL coasts are wonderful from middle of the state on northward. Stay away from southern LibDem strongholds if you want to keep your equilibrium; go there if you want to Freep fulltime. All of above are places I'm considering. Good luck!

I would say Savannah Georgia, beautiful city, lots to do, and if your looking for country, theres lots left to choose from just about 20 minutes out of the city. Your close to the beach, which is a very nice beach, I have to say. Good luck to you.

Maybe not mild for Texans. I see how you people drive with a little ice. Rapid City is not any colder than Albuquerque most winters. Generally you're seeing your lawn most of the winter, but can still drive 30 minutes and be skiing or snowboarding, or frittering your life-savings away in Deadwood. Another plus, we're not living in hell itself in July.

Are you a malcontent?

Yes, obviously.

Where would you move?

Florida was a nice place to live until so many people retired here (and that includes way too many of my relatives). I would prefer any place I can build my fortress of solitude and be left alone but I don't see that happening anywhere anytime soon.

The food is just so awful in Colorado, maybe it is the high altitude, but if you plan to eat the place is TBA.

Notice, when you leave Chicago headed West, there is a small sign there not very conspicuous, right as you leave Aurora that says. Hope you have your lunch with you, in the next 2000 miles someone May, or May Not, know how to burn a steak!

Oh, BTW, I left out NDAK, an obvious TBA, and Michigan, which you might want a summer house in on a lake, if you like to make an annual blood donation to the state's legendary billions of mosquitoes, which it does nothing about. In Florida, we CONTROL the little suckers.

definitely skip NY (that goes w/o saying)

I agree, especially avoid Long Island (unless you need to raise your blood pressure or you'd like to throw your money out the window).

Ha! Alaskan mosquitos are the mother of all parasites. That's why I am avoiding the "mosquito coast" regions.

Right now, my own preference would be to find an unclaimed, uninhabited island, adequate to sustain life for at least one person, and spend the rest of my life there. Then I could at least claim that it could be said of me after my death: "He died a free man."
