Freeper Suggestions on Where to Retire
Me | 4 Dec 2001 | Me

Posted on 12/04/2001 8:28:05 AM PST by hattend

I am looking for suggestions from FReepers in lower 48 for city/state recommendations on where to retire.

I have pretty much decided on the western US (excluding the Pacific Coast states) and would lean to the southwestern states. I would stay in Alaska but I am tired of the long winter nights.

Would prefer acreage but you can try to convince me to live in town. :-)

If you know of any on-line newspaper links that have the classified, a URL would be appreciated.

Thanks
Don

Future Birthplace of Captain Kirk

Would that be Admiral James Tiberius Kirk?

It looks like you have already made up your mind, Tucson Arizona? Take a look at Northwest Tucson.

Try Central America. You can get a great deal on property and labor is as cheap as dirt.

Oregon has no sales tax but does have a state income tax. Live in Vancouver WA with no income tax and shop across the river in Oregon with no sales tax.

Freeper Suggestions on Where to Retire

I would definitely rule out Baghdad, Tehran, or Beijing.

When I retire I often go to places like Big-O Tires. I used a Goodyear place once, but wasn't impressed.

Are you sure you're not 'treading' in the wrong thread?
:)

...if Mexico allowed ownership of property by gringos, I probably would do something like that.

Then you get into the two schools of thought about property ownership. It depends on what you want...i.e., will you stand to gain capital by owning a modest home in a retirement community, etc.

If what you want is low-cost living among beautiful surroundings, warm people, and colorful culture, go to Mexico...better yet, Portugal! (Check into it!)

If you want to play bingo and shuffleboard, ride in a golf cart to the grocery store, and talk about your health problems, go to the southwest U.S.

...Just havin' fun with you! :)

12.Ill, Ind, Iowa, and Ohio. Avoid anything in the midwest that starts with a vowel.

ROTFLMAO!

North Carolina. Lots of potential here, but Georgia and SC are probably better deals on the whole. Check into that awful intangible tax in NC. Foothills better than mountains, coast is toast every hurricane that comes hits it. Far more insects than Fla, and not as much of a yr around climate, and quite an income tax.

Texas. Surprisingly, if you don't mind those infernal summers, you might love Galveston or Padre Island, or the mountains of the far SW that are a hidden secret, but do Anglos have any future here?

Utah. Keep to cities if you are not Mormon, but if you are this is shangri la and Disneyland.

Virginia. Beautiful all along I-81 in the Valley...and look at that lovely little area between Roanoke and the NC border. Plan to get away from Dec 5 to March 5.

VT avoid.

WA, avoid unless you already live there.

W VA. This is really nice and the low cost leader secret. Steady decline in population leaves lots of nice older homes for YOU! Seriously, check it out, if you don't mind fairly hard winters. Avoid within 10 miles of coal mines, but SE and E and S parts of the state can be lovely.

Wis and Wyo, I would avoid. There you have it!

The land grant school was listed as one of the best deals in higher education. The alumni can be more proud of that fact...................Filling the NFL ranks with 5 year men is not important to everyone.

There are very few mosquitoes in the upland parts of the Carolinas, but along the NC coast the biting flies and other insectoids can be legendary.

Forget Florida. Too much heat, severe storms, political controversy, front lines of the WoD, man eating wild animals, crazy drivers, environmentalist wackos, 2 Democratic senators, Wexler, etc, etc.

You are welcome, however, to visit and leave lots and lots of money here.
