You're REALLY from Wisconsin if you know why Wisconsinites (and the University of Wisconsin mascot) are "Badgers".

Ooo, ooo - teacher, teacher - pick me, pick me. I know this one....

You can say that again about Milwaukee being democRAT corrupt!! At least it was when I lived there in the 60's and 70's. Next door to us lived the sister of E. Michael McCann (McKann? I forget!) the D.A. at the time. That family was really bad news!!! Undisciplined kids, drunk relatives driving over part of our yard, and just general unpleasantness over there.

I lived there when "Father" Groppi stirred up the blacks to riot in the late 60's. Last I heard, he was driving a bus! LOL!

By the way ... does the Polar Bear Club still take their annual dip in Lake Michigan on New Years Day?

Boy, I've been away a LONG time!!!

E. Michael McCann is STILL the Milwaukee County DA.

Fr. Groppi has been dead for a few years now. Brain cancer, I think.

Yes, and yours truly and Mrs. brewcrew (WIladyconservative) are official, baptized Polar Bears. Only did it once - 1987. Once was enough. Ain't enough booze'd get me to do that again.

Looked him up in google. He died in 1985, so it's been quite a while. He left the priesthood, then married. He worked as a Milwaukee bus driver, I do believe and he did die of brain cancer.

His parents had the most marvelous Italian meat market in Bay View. You'd walk in and almost become overwhelmed by the heady aromas. His dad made the best Italian sausage (both hot and mild) I've ever had.

Thanks for the update!!!

I will NEVER FORGET the wonderful ethnic restaurants in Milwaukee!! German, Polish, Serb, GREEK (my favorite! I wonder if "Never On Sunday" is still there on the East Side by the Lake?)

Someday I'd like to go back and refresh some memories!

For that you have to visit Dentice Brothers now on N. Jackson. Then a trip up to Sciortino's Bakery on Brady for Italian rolls.

I went to high school with a Dentice or two--their sausage was VERY good, but I liked Groppi's better. And I still dream about Sciortino's.....

And I'll need to hit a few of the Mexican places, too, even though we FINALLY have a few good authentic Mexican stores and restaurants in Green Bay. (I can't remember the names, but I know where they are.)

Oh, yeah--I think there's a road trip to Milwaukee in my future :-)) It's just hard to convince my hubby that I need to go to Milwaukee to get FOOD.

She also did some Larry King shows last summer. She wasn't in Green Bay. I'm fairly certain it was the Wagon Trail Resort near Sister Bay.

I think you're right. Now I remember that I saw the interview at the YMCA while I was working out on the treadmill. I think it was Sister Bay. I just remember that she was very complimentary to Door County and said she was having a wonderful time. I think she was on both King and Hannity & Colmes from Sister Bay. It still makes me sad. She was such a bright light.

"I was afraid my post would offend you"

I was not at all offended, friend.

Come to think about it, there were a few welfare queens around. For the most part the people were conservative with a good work ethic. We did have some democrats though. However, these were the old style democrats, not the new regime that we have today. Take care, God bless, and Merry Christmas!

Ah, the personification of FIB.

Sorry Catspaw to come off that way. I really like the people of Wisconsin. IMO, the quality of life in your state is head and shoulders above IL. I'd like to move to Wisconsin some day...that is if you guys let me! That said, I hope Da Bears trounce Da Packers.

Actually, I grew up in a little town right by the Illinois border in Kenosha County. I did live in Milwaukee from 1978 - 1981 and am familiar with National Avenue. I don't remember anything about a streetcar, though. I miss the greenery back there. I went back a couple of years ago for my mom's funeral, and forgot how beautiful and green it was during the summertime. However, I don't miss the winters, or shoveling snow. I love AZ when it comes to that. I don't think that I could handle the humidity there anymore. Take care, God Bless, and Merry Christmas!

I grew up right by the Illinois border in a small town in Kenosha County. Most everyone there called it "pop." My mom had been born and raised in the area, as well. My dad was born and raised in Shawano County and also called it "pop." I had an aunt who was from Chicago. She called it "soda." As a child, I thought that she was the most sophisticated person ever put on earth, so I followed her example and called it "soda." My husband, who is from Pennsylvania also calls it "soda" as does most people here in Arizona.

You are so right! Does anyone remember hearing margarine referred to as "oleo" or "ole" (oh-lee) for short?

That would be correct. And you probably both know what a "pasty" is, other than a item of clothing worn for the sake of modesty.

Aw, ya big lug. Of course we'll let you move to Wisconsin. I do see one itsy bitsy problem where you need some help. We think counseling and the proper attire will help. That problem? See below:

That said, I hope Da Bears trounce Da Packers.

See, that's the problem. I can hook you up with a counseler named "Vince" (or if you don't like him, one named "Curly")and send you to the Packers Pro Shop.

BTW, where did the Bears have their training camp? You have to say the name of the state OUTLOUD (cough cough cough).

I remember smuggling oleo from Illinois. Otherwise you had to buy these one pound bags of white stuff with a capsule of yellow dye in it & squish it around until the oleo inside was colored yellow. It took a long time before buying oleo in stick form was legal in Wisconsin.
