Karl Rove: Stayaway Christians Almost Cost Bush Election

STAYAWAY CHRISTIANS ALMOST COST ELECTION

Many Christians believe that prayer played a major role in sending George W. Bush to the White House, but stayaway believers came close to losing him the election, according to his chief political adviser, Karl Rove.

Rove said that one reason the 2000 election was so tight was that as many as 4 million Christian conservatives did not go to the polls, reported "The Chicago Tribune." Although the Bush campaign had expected 19 million evangelical voters to vote for their man, election returns revealed only 15 million turned out to cast ballots.

Speaking yesterday at an American Enterprise Institute seminar, Rove said the Bush campaign "probably failed to marshal support of the base as well as we should have," said the "Tribune." Rove added: "But we may also be returning to the point in America where fundamentalists and evangelicals remain true to their beliefs and think politics is corrupt and, therefore, they shouldn't participate."

Rove said that if the "process of withdrawal" went on it would be bad for the country as well as conservatives and Republicans. "It's something we have to spend a lot of time and energy on."

pardon me, but you're very foolish to believe that and it is very much an insult to my intelligence.

In 1978 the congress was easily 2/3's Democrat. A conservative Republican rookie congressman named Sam Steiger decided we needed a massive capital gains tax cut. He campaigned for it when everyone said he had no chance at all. The Republicans in those days opposed Steiger when he first proposed it as did the Democrats. But lo and behold a lot of Democrats decided to support Steiger's bill, then some Republicans came along and finally supported it. The bill was passed and Jimmy Carter signed it. All the economists said it was a great thing and stimulated the economy very effectively. Today Sam Steiger is on the fringes of the Republican party and is very much disliked by the Republicans precisely because he is a conservative who cares about our country.

In 1981 when Ronald Reagan came into Washington despite opposition from Republican leaders like Jerry Ford who tried very hard to defeat him even after he won in the primaries the Republicans had a much weaker position in congress than they have today. When Reagan introduced his tax cut people laughed about it. But he persisted and he campaigned for it. A solid 40% of the house that voted for Reagan's tax cut were democrats, Dick Gephardt voted for it and in fact complained that it was too small.

So, anyone who believes that we can't pass a tax cut is simply an idiot. We have to have Republican leaders who will support a real tax cut, not a phony Bush tax cut, before we achieve this success. But history proves that you are simply delusional.

Why do you think Dick Armey is leaving congress, journalists are saying that he says privately it is because of George Bush.

Today under Republican leadership the federal gov budget is growing at 4-5 times the rate of the economy. The best the democrats ever did was grow it at 2-3 times the rate of the economy. The Bush people themselves admit that we'll have to cut social security because too much money is being spent now.

Anybody who even looks casually at the situation knows that our nation will be bankrupted by government growth at these rates. A vote for a Republican is a vote for a socialist, that's plain and simple truth.

I suppose I could agree with you IF this nation had been founded as some sort of theocracy

The founding fathers had enough of government mixed with religion and that's why it wasn't

No one would be safe in the type of USA you dream of--not even yourself

Look to the theocracies of the Middle East (read that Islamic) and you will see what happens when the "church" governs...DON"T TREAD ON ME

Well, the pro-life-approved candidate in the primary turned out to be "damaged goods" (VERY crooked business deals that revolved around defrauding retirees) and this pro-choice candidate wanted to turn off state Medicaid funding for abortion. This wasn't a case of "half a loaf," even--this was turning down 75% of the loaf because the "party" (actually, the OTHER voters in the district) didn't agree with them on every last jot and tittle.

Before Jumpin' Jeffords switched sides, Republicans controlled the White House, Senate, and House. Did they ban partial birth abortion or even attempt to ban it?

The Senate GOP had no chance of passing the bill once people understood it would not be vetoed. The Dems would have towed the line, and at least 3-4 Republicans would have jumped. At least, that's my take.

Christians need to force our leaders to enact policies that are pleasing to Him.

Force!? And you wonder why I call you the Talibornagain!?

Politically unreliable.

Totally. Can you imagine the situation we would be in right now had Bush has the election stolen from him? Four million sitting on their hands, for no other reason but to protest one imagined trangression or another.

Another disruptor. Took longer this time to expose. What is going on with FR? Usually a lefty posing as a bigot is exposed within ten posts.

Ah, I see. You were referring to theoldright who I was responding to....

The flip side of this is that a deluge of handout grabbing freeloaders and illegal felons and aliens almost stole the election..

You quickly come to realize that the "good guys" are only "good" because the bad guys are so abysmally bad.

(sigh)I fear what you say has much merit. I would like to believe that if we had an unbiased media, that the Pubs would cut government and taxes and that things would improve. However, I am doubtful.

In absolute moral terms, I wouldn't pee on most republicans if he was on fire. They are detestable parasites.

I would not go that far. Although...I would call a spade a spade.

Hey Karl: there's a good way for the President to make Christians stay away in 2004 - keep appointing sodomites to high office.

Not to mention rabid abortion supporters like Tom Ridge.

Thanks for proving that the Republicans in Washington have no spine or leadership qualities. Vote on it up or down and see where the chips fall.

Statesmen they are not.

Were you referring to my response to Saundra? If so, you are misreading it as sarcasm.

Of course not you! Everyone knows you are as solid a right wing whacko as they come. I should have named names but I wanted the debate to die out. Let us just say anyone who signs up to FR and starts in on the religious angle within a week or so should be viewed with suspicion. Just common sense. Why is someone here today for the first time blasting Bush and using the same words SNL used to bash his father? Not because his faith has been offended by our President, I suspect.

Tom Ridge's new job has nothing to do with the abortion issue. He's been appointed to a position that suits his ability.
