I’ve found that the origin of the donkey as the symbol of the democratic party actually began in 1828, while running for president Anderew Jackson’s opponents referred to him as a ‘jackass.’ Apparently Jackson was so taken with the image that he used it as the symbol of his presidency, and it stuck with the dems from then on.
